I have the Mini 6 and love it, but it reloads apps a lot because of the 4GB RAM. If you don't switch much between apps and don't care about Apple Intelligence, go for it, but based on past history the 7 (with 8GB RAM, A17 Pro chip, 2x the storage in the base version, and supposedly fixed "jelly scroll") is likely to go on sale for $400 before too long.

Skip… instead get a new base mini 7 for $339, better than Amazon's deal. Here's how:
1. Wait for Apple Christmas promo: get $50 gift card.
2. Buy at Apple's education store: $50 off.
3. Use discounted $100 Apple gift cards: 15%-20% off appear repeatedly from Target, Best Buy, Amazon now through Dec 31. I buy over a $1000 worth between now and Dec 31 every year! The discount is extended in a store gift card at the aforementioned retailers where I've regularly shopped throughout the year and spend them all long before year is up.
4. Enjoy a brand new model mini 7 for less than 3 year old Mini 6 - Amazon's not-so-good-anymore deal!

Apple gift cards haven't been discounted in a long, long time. Best deal you can get nowadays is a $10-$15 Amazon/Target/BB gift card when you buy a $100 Apple gift card.
I gave my kid an 9.7 inch iPad that I wasn't using and it was comical seeing such a child with such a large device. I firmly believe the iPad and iPad mini should have been switched around so such a smaller device could be cheaper and in more hands and the larger screen goes towards those who actually NEED it.
I could upgrade that iPad to a much better one for about $200 when they hit a sale. I could not downgrade the screen size to a mini without paying...$350 + tax. Silly stuff!

Thanks for clarifying … discount given as store gift card & sometimes 5% credit card rebate … but 15% or 20% overall via paying with store credit card … more complex than buying a straight discount like the old days (Costco used to be best, no longer 😢 )
I buy over $2000 of Apple gift cards averaging 18% discount this way all throughout the year from Amazon, target, Best Buy, sometimes Walmart and a couple other retailers. It's how I buy my iPhone every year and Apple services and the occasional iPad mini 7.
I buy when offered a 15% or 20% rebate that is a store gift card from the store you buy them from all the stores I mentioned I am constantly buying things throughout the year from those stores so that discount is applied within months to my purchases. It's by far the best deal going.
That equates to a 15 to 20% discount … over a year. It's about 18% on average for what I buy.

I guess we'll have to see somebody do a side-to-side comparison with a high-speed camera.
