Was looking between Porter 56, Cotopaxi 42L, and REI Co-op Ruckpack 40.
Reviews was good for all models, but ended up with REI, it was on sale for ~100, with included Raincover.
But Cotopaxi is nice about design, it more easy to organize, it opens like a butterfly.

Ive had my porter46 since 2012 - have taken it many places (not super frequently but enough to go through rounds of abuse) and agree - love that thing
No bag that maxes storage is perfect, and the Porter isn't, either. This Cotopaxi folding out sounds interesting, but I don't replace things that still have useful life in 'em. At these point, I would assume these are like-priced. I think mine was $75 or $80 back then.

You put this bag under the seat in front of you since it's your personal item?
Sometimes. It does fit.

Yeah, there's no way a 42L fits underneath an airline seat.
It does actually, just about, and depending on if you have a full clear space under the seat in front of you, or if the seat leg cuts into that space.

This! Also this old version used a different TPU which notoriously breaks apart after some use. They've apparently fixed that in the new version. Also, OOS
It's now back in stock. Just search for cotopaxi and filter to show the newest. Hope they have a different color.

I used this backpack to travel across Asia for a year and it's still in incredibly good shape. The quality on these bags is so good. Especially the zippers. I really can't recommend them enough and would buy at full price again. The ability to open from the middle and spread out gives easy access to all your stuff and I prefer a backpack to a roller bag. If you are a backpacker this should highly be considered over the hiking bags.
