I just got one of these second hand after using my 18-55 and a bunch of primes.
I thought I'd want wider and the more reach, but it is a good amount bigger. The OIS is nice with my xt5 and I'll probably still bring it when I travel to the PNW because of the rain
if you really want this lens, get a used one. plenty of them on the used market for like $400.
Agreed, $600 is steep. B&H has a used one, 9/10 condition, for $388 (no tax for Payboo card). Not uncommon to see them sell on eBay for $320-330 shipped + tax, often bundled with filters.
I've had this lens for ~3 years (came bundled with my X-S10) and have only used it twice. Biggest gripe is that it's heavy and big (big for a zoom lens that only goes to 80mm). I have the following zoom lens for my Fujifilm camera and my favorite (that I use 90% of the time when I want a zoom lens) is the 18-135mm:
The 18-135mm is roughly same size and weight as the XF16-80, but it offers way more versatility (when I'm doing street photography and see something I really love and want a very zoomed in picture of it to get fine details, I can go all the way to 135mm). With the XF18-135, if I go to 80mm, the aperture steps down to F5.3......so compared to F4 on the XF16-80, I'm only losing ~18% light (so if you were using ISO160 with the XF16-80, you just need to bump it up to ISO200 with the XF18-135) when going above 80mm. The XF18-55 is also a great lens if you're on a very tight budget - I bought mine used on eBay this spring that is in 99.5% new condition for only $275 with shipping (an absolute no-brainer).

FYI the difference between F4 and F5.3 is more than 2/3 stop, not 18%. If you're changing ISO, you'll see 160/F4 and ~300/f5.3. I mention this because it's not an insignificant change in low light situations. Someone running ISO 1600 with F4 will be nearing ISO 3000 at F5.3, and older Fuji sensors get pretty noisy there.
