I was going to say the same, you stopped wheeling and dealing when it comes to the apple purchase,

my Apple ID credit balance is filled with discounted gcs from over the year, so:

$540.17 is more like $432.14 or about avg 20% discounted $$
but wasn't any savings initially buying the cards, totally lost by not using them and holding on to them for over a year?

for me, not really. technically we all lose $$ for every single day we have any amount of value laying around unused but in the world of sd, we usually don't count that unless it is stored up and left alone for a long time. my Apple ID account balance is very active and fluctuates constantly. the value of those gcs have to count for something else this forum wouldn't mention them because nobody spends them right away.

gotcha. i buy gift cards mostly because i have a purchase in mind right now. gift cards are a great value for vendors. i'm sure a high % of them get forgotten or lost. total gain for vendor means happy vendor.

for apple, it's easy....I try to add them to my account right away so I don't forget them and to make sure they are valid. past few years there have been so many apple gc discounts, I reckon 15% is avg. helps to pay for the apple tax.

Do you need a .edu email to order or how does Apple validate your status? Would love to order one but I haven't had an .edu email in decades. 😀 Thanks!

The Apple Edu Store requires that everyone taking advantage of the lower price be a student, educator, etc., but to date in the USA there is zero verification of this requirement. In other words, anyone can buy at this price, and anyone (ie non-students) have been buying at the discounted Edu prices for decades.

There is no verification. No special email address is required. Absolutely nothing special is required - just go online, buy the goods via Apple Edu Store link (google or see above), and have it delivered to your house. In some very limited Apple Stores (ie the retail store) sometimes there is a gentle push for student ID; in all cases noted, stating one is buying it for students in their lives (ie their kids, grandkids, whatever) resolved any difficulties.

In other words: Anyone can get this deal with zero effort.

___

Updated wiki due to constant Edu questions.

Sorry. The thread is 56 pages so I tried to skim through it but I must have skipped previous questions about it. Thanks for the info everyone!

Got 3x100 Apple GC from target online + 2 more at Target in-store. Bought the M4 Mac Mini, and have set it up as a server. That thing's crazy fast for the size.

honestly at least there was a reason behind C:\, which is after A and B floppy drives, and you can always remap your C drive to any letter. the strength of windows directory is that things are (not always, but normally) more portable, aside from a few libraries and registry values, things are typically stored in one place: e.g. a program stays in a program folder. you can move that folder between systems, and as long as the both system has the necessary library, it will probably run. with Unix like file directory, everything is divided into different functions in different directory, often spread amongst /bin /etc /opt/ /var /home /lib /run /usr/bin .... most application are NOT portable, you cannot just copy one program folder and move to anther UNIX system and expect it to work, it often won't work. which is why container are created.apple was smart to shield most users from the file directory, because unless you really know what you doing, it is confusing as hell.I do think, however, for 500 dollars, this is unbeatable if you use it for video and photo editing due to superb software support and hardware integration for those application, which is why i am considering getting it.
You have no idea what the fark you are talking about. In Unix all your information is in your home folder. Applications don't need to be migrated at all.

Does anyone know if there is an expiration date on this price? Waiting on a physical gift card to arrive from Amazon on Tuesday before pulling trigger but don't want to miss out.

This isn't a sale. It's the regular student pricing.
