This is a good deal; although, it depends on the entree item you get to make it even better. For instance, I have found the lunch entrees and breakfast items are the best to order when getting the free drink. The prices are either AT or below the price of a smoothie. I was able to try out nearly the entire smoothie menu last time they had done this. I still feel like I missed one though, Avacolada.
The fruit bowls, I am thinking of getting this time; however, again, you are not getting a 1.) perfect buy an item at an equal price to a smoothie and get a smoothie free or even a buy one item at a cheaper price, compared to the smoothie price, and get a smoothie for free (which would be the best bet).
What I arrive at is, buying all these fruits in bulk (some may not be in season depending on the type of smoothie you would want, the fruit has a chance of going bad..berries tend to go bad fast unless frozen), walking around a store to find them, and then bringing them all back home. Add that to you having to get the ice as well (unless you have a fridge icemaker) and a blender.
But, funny you should mention this, because I apply this strategy when buying these smoothies.
So, what they do at Tropical Smoothie Cafe is that there are certain drinks where they restrict one from modifying it totally (with all the fruits they have and they add certain items to different tiers). For instance, one tier of smoothies has yogurt added or has fruit you cannot find in other smoothies. There is a peanut butter one with at a slightly increased price and this is because of an addition of an ingredient that only that tiers offers. There is also a cheaper smoothie without that ingredient. Luckily, the last time they had done this, I was able to try them all. But if I was running low with dates, coming to a close before it was over; I would try to get close by choosing a cheaper smoothie item and modifying it to be as close to the more expensive option as possible.
But since this discussion is all about smoothies, I challenge you to do what you stated. Give us insight on the prices you paid, the price of the blender and ice. We can come back after this promotion and compare. Have fun!

ACAI BERRY BOOST™
$7.99
470 Calories
acai, pomegranate, banana, blueberries & strawberries
I don't know what acai is but I have a bag full of blueberry, a bag full of chopped bananas, and a bag full of strawberries in the freezer. You don't need to go to bj, Sam's club, or costco's. Go to target and look at all the frozen fruits they have for sale there. After you are done making it, u can buy 24 hour water bottle or something to keep it cold all day and you put it in there. I have already thought of everything.

ISLAND GREEN®
$7.99
420 Calories
spinach, kale, mango, pineapple & banana
You can buy the spinach bag for 1.99, you can buy the kale for 1.99, you can put that in the freezer to because it might help because they do expire fast. You can buy a mix bag fruit that has mango, pineapples and you can buy bannas like 8 of them for 1.69 or something. Each banna has like 100 calories so I like to put 5 of them in there at a time. Because 420 Calories smoothies are nothing. I like to average them out at 1000 Calories or 2000 calories so I add a lot of yogurt. A 900 calories yogurt from Weis cost 2.19, some times I use the whole thing or sometimes I use half. But right now I'm on a salad only because the dentist told me I have high blood pressure so no smoothies or sugar for me for right now, just water.

Then you are not making it exactly. I am paying for the convenience of them being able to get Acai.

I have to go to a specific store, walk around, and see if they have things? Time consuming. I have to buy a water bottle to keep it cold all day? I just want to drink it for a period of time.
This is why convenience.

Now I have to check my freezer to make sure I used up everything for the price I paid for them? I have to look around for the best price for yogurt?
In the last sentence you stated that you have diet restrictions and I am guessing this is why you may not want to partake in the smoothie deals from this business. I get it.

These menus are curated to sell a lot of the product. If they did not sell, they would not be on the menu. Additionally, there was science behind how to write it out so that these high school kids could understand how to make it. Still, this business makes it convenient. Fruit not in season? No problem. Can get two items for one without having to overspend? Yes.
Do not forget. During this promotion, you can also get quesadillas, etc. That means you would have to go out to the store, get every ingredient on their menu and make two items like that everyday. It is time consuming. All I am paying for them to make it is like the price of an item, lower than the price of the smoothie. So I am getting a smoothie ($7.29 value up to $8.29) and the cheapest entree or breakfast item for like $4.99, if I get the All American Wrap.
The best value for this smoothie deal is going to be the breakfast entrees, which they serve all day. For instance, the All American Wrap goes for $4.99 (in my area). To maximize this deal, I would go for a smoothie that is $7.89 and then prioritize from most expensive to least expensive (and look at that, it is the new Caramelized Pineapple smoothie, one that I have not tried yet.) I have already tried all of them (I think I may have missed the Avocalada and so I may try that at some point).

I always use to go for one, when I was little, when my mom shopped in this marketplace area within the city I grew up in.
