I had this game on PS2 back in the day. Loved the art style and I recall enjoying the gameplay and story. Definitely worth checking out at this price if you've never played.

Solid price. Apparently I didn't own it yet either. The remake seems to be poorly received.
Admittedly I haven't played the remake yet but it seemed to have received the new trend of review bombing any and all remakes / remasters because people are offended that some monolith of their childhood has been somehow diminished by something that didn't alter the original work in anyway.
You'll notice a common theme among the overly harsh reviews of remakes / remasters (not just XIII)....they spend the entire time comparing the games, not measuring the new work off its own merits as a standalone product. Especially concerning insanely pedantic details.
Another thing you tend to notice is the truly bad reviews on Steam seem to have an 'played' time of only a few minutes (then they demand a refund after leaving their review of a game they didn't give a chance to....only buying to give the game a bad review).
Edit: apparently the remake is $1.99 on Steam (historical low) so I just bought it...we'll find out of the haters are right or not

In XIII's case, the remake was actually pretty bad. For multiple reasons.
The "What Happened?" series on youtube did a good video on the situation.
AFAIK the remake has actually had quite a few updates to correct and fix many of the issues since the launch version. Not exactly sure if it's a better game or not though since I haven't played it.
But I'll find out soon since I bought the Classic and the Remake just now. 👍

If you want the HD remake you can pick that up for $1.99 on the US Steam Store, also through the 12th.
Edit to include that it's the same prices on GOG if preferer DRM Free.
