If you just want a decent computer, not anything you want to upgrade later on this isn't a bad deal. I would certainly go AM5 if it where me but this isn't necessarily bad for what it is.

This is a good budget build for an 8-core CPU, which is not bad at all, where you can put the extra 100 bucks for AM5 in the GPU instead. Even though everyone is talking about the room for upgrade in AM5, an 8-core CPU should age well for many more years. For the budget limited crowd, AM6 will be out when you wish for an upgrade.
There is also a deal for 5900XT if you prefer the build to age even better, but it is ~370, meaning paying $130 for 8 extra cores.
I am still using a 3rd gen i7, and I can tell you that the number of cores ages very well - you can just upgrade the GPU.

This computer could handle a RTX 3000 or RX 6000/7000 which would cost more than this PC even with a cheap case and PSU.

Not a bad option if you want to focus on a graphics card with your budget instead of raw CPU power (games vs work or LLM's)

Can still upgrade, just can't upgrade the CPU solo.

Something to consider. Can always bring everything besides the mb/cpu/ram over to a new build.

I wish the 5800XT was a slightly slower 5900X, the same way the 5900XT is a slightly slower 5950X.

At the end of 2022 and beginning of 2023 I was snatching up lower spec 6-core motherboard+CPU bundles at Micro Center for $99.99, $126.99, and $129.99 and pairing them with $45 of RAM. The current retail price at Micro Center for a comparable CPU+motherboard is around $135.

This deal from Newegg is more universally available and comes along with a fairly powerhouse CPU. In fact, if you dig around you can get a lower spec bundle with a Ryzen 5 5600GT for $190 which is directly competitive with Micro Center pricing.

I'll still be waiting for another good end of year bundle from Micro Center, but otherwise this deal is a reasonable way to get yourself eligible for an automatic upgrade to Windows 11 for an older system.

Good luck!
Jon

Thanks for posting this OP Smilie

Granted I'm probably generalizing way too much over my bad experience with an ASRock MB that didn't support my CPU right out of the box .. no BIOS flash button so had to send it back and opted for a MB with bios flash which led me upgrade to the latest stable BIOS without having to assemble the entire PC.. could be wrong but I don't think this MS supports bios flashback?

Looking at the newegg listings I see that the CPU is listed as first being available July 2024

https://www.newegg.com/amd-ryzen-...6819113846

and the motherboard is listed as being first available February 2023

https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-b...6813145434

I could be totally wrong here Smilie and hopefully wiser heads than mine will weigh in on this but.. I'm wondering if there's a chance the MB might not support the CPU right out of the box if the CPU was manufacturered after the MB was (assuming the newegg dates are correct and do indeed reflect the manufacture date).

Unlike using a 9000 series on an MB that supports 7000 series, we are talking about running a 5000 series CPU on an MB that supports 5000 series. You shouldn't need a BIOS flash/update to run this combo.
Additionally, 5800XT is an overclocked version of 5800X, which was released in 2020. I'd be very shocked if the CPU+MB combo doesn't work out of the box.

FYI, I bought ASUS PRO B550M-C/CSM with 5900XT. This MB was released in December 31, 2020. I will update here and let everyone know if they work out of the box in a few more days.

Here is the deal I bought if anyone is interested:

Edit: my combo works out of the box.

this motherboard has really bad 4+2 vrm set up, and doesn't auto correct ram errors
no bueno! I honestly don't know what gigabyte was thinking here, back when the 5800xt came out everyone would have said this isn't adequate and you'll want a good cooler to make up for it's performance

go with the intel instead for $29 more!

lol. Are you suggesting the 600$ AM5 route is a better deal than this? 😂

The VRM in that B760M isn't all that and criticized by SDers just as much. Also this 5800xt is arguably a faster CPU with lower power consumption (ie not as hot).

On top of that that was previously a $250 combo with a i7, so no one in the right mind should get that complete trash deal.

Nah. Its fine if you are not returning stuff and even if you are it's not like everyone is running into problem. I personally had no problem returning just as recently as last month.
