In general, no.

By nature of you even asking the question, the answer to this kind of question will always be no, nobody can explain this to you in a way that will make sense. It's like asking why someone would pay a lot for steak when you could just eat ramen. You'll never be able to explain to that person why something is "better" if they've reduced the value of the item to merely being "food".

This isn't meant to be insulting, if you have a $15 backpack and are happy with it, live your life. There is no reason to wonder why anybody else spends what they spend on theirs.
Smokin deal. This price only happens a few times/yr...meaning 2 or 3 times so I wouldn't wait if you're on the hunt for this backpack. FWIW, I love mine. Been using it for both work and family travel since it was released. It's waterproof (with waterproof zippers) so it keeps your laptop safe in the rain (I can personally vouch for this), can handle 2-3 days of clothes for short trips (fits 2 Nomatic medium packing cubes), magnetic bottle holders so they "stick" to the side of the backpack even after they're stretched out, has a separate sleeve for shoes/sandals, fits my work 16" m3 macbook pro easily, and even when fully loaded it always sits upright. Always. Once you realize how handy that little design perk is you never want to go back. You can always do a drive by and scoop it up by the top handle without fail. And last, it fits under airplane seats without an issue. For travel purposes, I can't imagine a better backpack.
4+ lbs for a 20L bag is pretty heavy. This is a bag for travel, and when you carry it around all day, every ounce of weight matters.

I ordered the Costco version which is travel pack "essential" 20L.
Although it looks like the same bag as on nomatic website it has quiet a few features missing including:

1) straps can't be tucked away when using bag briefcase style.
2) secret pocket under the straps is missing.
3) in front panel and main panel there are less pockets with zippers 15+ compared to 20+
4) Glasses case is missing
5) Retractable key ring is absent
6) Ability to pass cables from every compartment is missing

So overall this deal at $155 is a steal compared the regular prices Travel Pack "essential" on costco website.
Costco Next site doesnt show anything about what you said, such as 20+ pockets, glasses case, etc. Do you think they changed some features (shrinkflation) without telling us?

I watched a lot of reviews on the 20L travel pack on YouTube.
All the features that I mention above are missing in the essential Costco version. That's why it's cheaper.
And we can buy the same bag non-essential from nomatic website also.
It doesn't make any sense for nomatic to sell that bag on Costco website and then sell it again via Costco next.
I literally bought mine on the Costco deal and have all the features you are talking about. LOL Bought it for $157 before tax on Feb 22nd of this year.

No, that deal was for the BACKPACK (14L or 20L). This one is for the TRAVEL PACK (20L). Similar but different & the Travel Pack expands better to pack in some clothes.
This is correct. You can tell by the base price before the sale and by comparing the pictures between the 20L travel pack and backpack.

Are you confusing Costco from Costco next?
The one at Costco is not a deal. It's the regular price.
The one at Costco next is subsidized.
The only explanation is if you bought it in February they might have changed it since then.
I just bought it this week and it has less features.

The one on Costco website advertises less pockets like 15+ while the nomatic website says something like 22+ pockets.

I think the one on nomatic website via Costco next is the same bag as on nomatic website. JMTC

I'm going to return the essential one I just bought last week.
I ordered this one for $155.

so tempting, is anyone currently own this backpack can confirm with me if the laptop compactment can hold two laptops (more specifically, one 16inch MBP for work and one 14inch MBP for personal use). If not, does anyone have good recommendation on which backpack can do so ?

thank you.

Can someone explain why this is priced as it is? 20L, (24 convertible) is a small backpack. When looking through the features, it doesn't seem to have any features that something from Patagonia or Timbuk2 wouldn't have. These also appear to be made in China or elsewhere in Asia.

The Timbuk2 authority deluxe backpack I have cost about half this and has better ratings on Amazon (4.6 vs 4.3 for this). If you are paying this much, why not get a Tom Bihn or something else with superb resale?

I dont get the fuss about "Made in China". F almost everything is made in China. Some Patagonia Arteryx Northface backpacks are made in China and Asia

Is the Timbuk2 comparable (size and features)? Not being snarky, interested to know as I need a new bag.

Also it seems like the jump to Tom Bihn is more than double this price, or is there a comparably priced/equipped bag from TB?

Costco Next I guess, this same deal. I didn't even know you could buy it otherwise but for anyone looking to buy this bag definitely get it from Costco Next.

Neither do I. I despise being told I should buy something Made in America just because of that. No, you should earn my business by either being the best or being the most price competitive, not that I should overpay so some CEO and his execs can become super rich or employees can drive $70,000 pickup trucks. Also never seen anyone in American companies complain when people from other countries buy their products. I don't see workers here demanding we don't sell our products to other countries or that people in other countries should support their local companies and not buy from us.

Does this have jet engines? Price would suggest yes.

I would buy if there are ones that I like that are made in Japan/USA/Italy/Canada or where ever but 1) price is gonna be higher 2) Its v rare to see them.

I got this bag in August during the last sale and it's really worth the cost. This bag is amazing. Fits on the airplane under the seat in front and stays upright all the time. All the compartments are really well laid out. Just really pleasant to carry on the trips.
