Does this use a proprietary app or can you use Google Home or Alexa to control it?

I just got rid of this one. That "Save energy and get rewarded" things sounds good, but in real life it's a gigantic "CHECK DEALS" button that takes up a huge amount of real estate and you have to scroll past it to get to actual functionality. Clicking it never resulted in anything other than "SORRY NO DEALS".
Braindead UI aside, it also did not support changing the delta in which second stage aux heat comes on, and it also would not turn off until the set temperature was reached. As a result the resistor heat would come on if the temperature was even as mild as like 60F. Support confirmed this was working as intended. Swapped it out for a different model that supported aux heat variable delta (almost any of them) and saved like 50 bucks a month in heating bills.

I also have a heat pump living in North Carolina. Are you saying that it was using auxiliary heat instead of heat pump resulting in higher electricity bills?

I can control mine with my Amazon echo. Uses the Resideo Total Connect Comfort app.

Also I got two of these from my utility company for a couple dollars. Check your gas or electric company for similar programs.

Picked up this unit on a deal from local utility, $25.

Pros: Nicest looking and most versatile display of any on the market in $50-$100 price range (IMO).

Cons: No control of cycle duration, either directly by time or by temperature deadband. This results in short-cycling the equipment and related wear (and annoyance).

Bottom line: can't recommend.

It was doing both. If you leave it set to heat at all times then only the heat pump would come on when it cycles, as expected. But if you use the "smart" part of it and set a schedule (example: you keep it at 68 while home but 64 while at work), it would use the emergency resistor heat when it got to the "home" portion of the schedule. The resistors would then stay on until it got to 68. It would probably then not use resistor heat the rest of the night if mild conditions like that are still happening.

If it was like 40 outside then the resistors are going to be on all the time while heat is running. This is because when it cycles and the heat first comes on after being off for more than a few minutes, the air in the ducts is going to be colder and it's going to push you beyond that delta. There's no way to turn it off and no way to tell it to only come on if the differential is great enough to constitute an "emergency".

For those who are wondering about a lack of a deadband setting, this thermostat, as well as most other Honeywell thermostats, do not have an adjustable deadband. Honeywell thermostats use a "cycles per hour" (CPH) algorithm. For this model, the heating CPH is based on your selected system type (Resideo should really make this clearer to consumers and not include selectable settings without clearly explaining what they do). Some models let you adjust CPH directly, but this one does it under the hood with the selected system type, otherwise those settings (especially standard vs high efficiency gas/oil heat) would be useless (I can confirm this is 100% accurate). Anyone who says otherwise is knowingly and intentionally lying and probably work for a competitor.

Electric Forced Air - 9 CPH
Standard Efficiency Gas/Oil Forced Air - 5 CPH
High Efficiency Gas Oil/Forced Air - 3 CPH
Heat Pump - 3 CPH
Steam - 1 CPH

Cooling is locked at 3 CPH (only the professional models have adjustable CPH for cooling).
I have three of these thermostats and I have never noticed unusually high electric or gas bills. However, we have gas heat, not a heat pump.
I can confirm my information is 100% honest and truthful and I do NOT work for or represent Resideo in any way.
Slickdeals should really disable the downvote button on this deal, since there is likely to be a lot of bias and misinformation.

Stop spreading misinformation - CPH is controlled by the selected system type. Resideo doesn't make this obvious when setting up your thermostat, but I can confirm this is 100% accurate, otherwise those system type settings would be useless (specifically standard vs. high efficiency gas/oil heat). If you want to reduce the cycle rate of your furnace, you can set it to High Efficiency, even if you have a standard efficiency furnace. It won't harm your equipment.
