If this is the Katana chassis, I would steer clear even with this price. The hinges aremade of the cheapest plastic you can imagine and break easily. I saw lots of posts warning about them but planned to use it as a desktop replacement so I wasn't worried- they still broke after 6 months of gentle use. If your plan is desktop replacement, maybe. If you plan to use this as a normal lapotop, no way.

Can you confirm if it is the "Katana chassis" and how does one tell?

Yep, that's always the thing with these sub-$1000 gaming laptops. Weak displays

Not necessarily. You can get sub $1000 gaming laptops from Acer, Asus, Dell, and HP with 100% sRGB screens. MSI is just notorious for using terrible displays in their low to mid range laptops. The hinges also fall apart.

at this price range, you have to either pick color accuracy, or high refresh rate. this is a 144Hz screen, not many 100% srgb screen at this price rate and go 144Hz.

Asus has been offering their Tuf laptop with an RTX 4070 and a 144hz 100% sRGB screen for over a year now for under $1000 during frequent and long lasting sales at multiple retailers.

In fact, right now you can get the Dell G16 7630 Laptop with a 16" QHD+ (2560x1600) 240Hz 100% DCI-P3 (even better than 100% sRGB) screen, i9-13900HX, and RTX 4070 for under $1k. Higher refresh rate, higher resolution, and great color.

Or, get the Acer Nitro 16 with a 16" 165hz 100% sRGB 400nits screen, RTX 4060, and it even has a USB 4 port, currently on sale for $720(no mail in rebate required). Lower price, better screen, better ports.

And we've seen Acer, Asus, Dell, and HP gaming laptops with 144hz+ 100% sRGB screens regularly go on sale for under $1k.

You can get a good screen at this price range, just not from MSI.

It seems like one of the deals on the Dell G15 might be a little better. No rebates involved. Right now, Dell has the Dell G15 with a Ryzen 7 7840HS (which is almost identical in performance to this laptop, but uses a little more power), and has the same RTX4060 GPU for $799. If you can get the 10% off coupon, the Dell would be about $720 without rebates. Not as portable, though.

Or check out the Acer Nitro 16 currently on sale for $720(no rebate). Similar specs but Better screen, better ports, and bigger battery.

This MSI just isn't a good deal given the better options available.
