My mixer just died, and yeah, I could get a cheapie for a wee bit less, but I like the carrying case and extra beater gizmos.

A medium grade hand mixer is 50 bucks.
Seeing as I just went through this myself, I'd suggest anyone try whipping egg whites with their mixer as soon as they get it. Some hand mixers just don't have the speed/horsepower. Believe or not, I was not impressed with the KitchenAid handheld.

tips: use only one beater for thick dough

I use the stand mixer to whip whites so I can multitask. I've never tried it with a hand mixer, but I'm assuming this one can, since is specifically comes with a separate whisk attachment instead of just the standard double blades. I'll probably never use the whisk attachment.
