I just ordered this a few days ago. I had previously owned the Fridgedaire Gallery which is also on sale at Costco, but it just stopped working one day after about 4 montths. I started a thread in a Costco forum and learned that was a common occurence, but the feedback on this GE Opal was overwhelmingly postive. Best results are when using Distilled water, and then you don't have to descale. Thanks OP this is a great deal!

Do not buy this from anywhere except Costco. You will want to return it eventually, and even if it is more money from Costco, it is far cheaper there since you can get a refund a year or 2 down the road. These machines are awesome (I'm on my 4th one in about 4 years), but unless you're incredibly lucky, it absolutely will break.

How long after purchase are you able to return?

Ha. Saw this thread and clicked on it just to say exactly that. My 1.0 (which was originally newer than the 2.0 but different design than the original FirstBuild Opal) died just under warranty but they said they are done with me after they replaced it.

Besides calcification issues that everyone swears can only be prevented by distilled water, and having to incessantly run sanitize and decalcify cycles, the auger bushing on these starts to deteriorate and eventually allow for play in the rotation, leading to auger scraping against the steel column. In addition to the unit sounding like a dying cat eating a dying duck, you'll get what seems like mold in the water tank (these recycle the melted ice back into their own reservoir) but is actually metal shavings. That's if your gearbox doesn't break first. Anyway, a lovely little machine that honestly brings me more joy than my $8k Follett did, but it definitely has its issues.

If anyone can explain the science behind RO water causing calcification vs distilled water not causing it, I'd be fascinated to hear it. On this 2nd machine we've only been using distilled and it is somewhat maddening to have to distill large amounts of water every 2-3 days.

There's not really a limit. I've returned one a year and a half later.
