Maui for us was a happy medium. Going to Kauai over New Year's, but it definitely doesn't seem as budget friendly, imo.

This weekend said the sale ended 11/11 but they've extended it a few times already. Must not be selling as many as anticipated

Kauai is probably the least tourist trappy, but not usually budget friendly. Oahu is most touristy, but you can also find great deals in Waikiki. Maui is semi touristy and usually not budget friendly. The Big Island would be my recommendation for balancing least touristy and budget friendly. You can experience any climate on the island if you are willing to drive around, and it has some amazing beaches if you are willing to work for it. In one week you can experience 90°/full sun/beaches, a snow capped mountain sunrise or sunset, rain forests with amazing waterfalls, Volcanoes National Park, world class stargazing, or Montana-like ranch country. IMO the Big Island is a hidden gem with bad marketing.

The issue I always have with Southwest are the lack of nonstop flights. Do I really want to take what should be a 5 hour flight and turn it into a 12 hour ordeal with a layover? Nope.

It's worst from DC. Overnight layover and there's basically no savings vs major carriers.
