The 8840U is a pretty good low power processor and the integrated graphics are the Ryzen 780m which power most current gaming handhelds so, while this is NOT a gaming laptop it should offer a good balance of power, battery life and casual gaming (1080p at 60fps). Laptops with the higher performance version of this chip (8840hs) have been on sale recently with essentially the same specs for $600 (albeit with 'flip/360' hinges) so this seems like a good price

The 300 nits screen is ok. RAM is upgradable to 32GB which is a plus

The only thing I really don't like... The weight is 4.12lbs. This chip is supposed to be for a thin and light laptop. Sure it's a 16" screen and it is thin (0.75") but it is not light
I would rank the common 2024 processors in processor speed, graphics power, and efficiency when used without a dGPU:

1. 8840U / 8845HS / 8840HS / 7840HS / 7840U
2. 155H
4. 8645HS / 8640HS / 7640HS / 8640U / 7640U / 135H / 125H
5. 125U / 135U / 155U / 165U
6. 150U / 1365U / 1355U / 1265U / 1255U
7. 120U / 1335U / 1235U / 1225U

Doesn't include the latest Ryzen AI chips but those cannot be had for less than $1000. Doesn't include the low end processors like 7520U because you should not buy 4 year old tech. Doesn't include some of the common gaming laptop chips like 13700H because those are almost exclusively used with GPUs which mess up the table.
I use a numpad every day for work to input numbers in spreadsheets or calculations. Also, a numpad is desirable if emulating old DOS games😄

Is the body aluminum, and does anyone know how the battery life is on this? I looked on the page didn't see anything about these

Yes, why is it so heavy? Same weight on Newegg so probably it's not a typo.

It is fully metal build. Battery life depends on your use cases. Costco page clearly says it is 14 hours but that is probably just for video playback at lowest brightness. It has a 54 WHr battery, pretty efficient Processor and a 1080p 300-nits IPS screen; none of which are power hungry. So, with normal day-to-day work, I think you will get 7 to 9 hours.

Hi Guys, would you recommend this costco one ( Ryzen 7 8840U) or one from the Dell website (13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1355U)?

Tourch screen is not important.

I might end up looking like an idiot but why the number pad? I never use these and the off center keyboard to me doesn't make sense.

If you are using the number pad, what for?

Once you enter the 15.6-16in Windows Laptop range you tend to get the numbad. I miss it when i don't have it on a keyboard as i type numbers in way faster with it.

Just ordered for our 17 year old for Christmas for light gaming, photo editing etc. Seems like a solid deal.

Can you guys offer an opinion on this versus the $500 HP Victus at Walmart? Doing mostly business stuff (QB, Excel). Maybe some light photo or video work and light gaming? And portability isn't a huge factor. It'll mostly sit on my desk. Thx!
