Cant speak to this being a deal, but this thermometer is an essential in my kitchen. I ran through some cheaper amazon versions before i spent the money on this. Hasn't failed me since.

Best gift you can get a home cook - or yourself if you've been guessing meat doneness your whole life! These rarely go on sale below the usual $100, so who cares if it's a weird color, add the silicone case that has magnets on it so it can stick it to an oven or hood. Might seem like a lot, but these are way sturdier than cheaper versions. Built like a tank. And they're larger than cheap ones so when they're open, you can reach a little bit into an oven without burning your hand or pulling the rack out all the way. Sleep/wake function is an added bonus to these newer models. Before when they went to sleep, you had to close the wand all the way and open it back up. Now you just shake it and it's good to go. Maybe my favorite oven tool along with my Bonavita pour over coffee thingy. It's the small things. 😍

Is this really any better than the cheapo instant read thermometer I already have?

Admittedly, it doesn't get temp in one second - more like 3-5 seconds, but still pretty quick.

What's the different a degree hotter or colder make for your home cooks? Maybe not much. But for professionals, these are the ones they reach for. They're reliable, well built, and designed for the function. You can certainly do a lot with a cheapo instant read, but if you want to trust what you're seeing is accurate ThermoWorks is actually calibrating their gear.

I have used the most popular mid-range models that have buttons and sell for $20-ish, and the original Thermapen that now goes on sale for $60-ish, and this Thermapen One that you never find for less than $70.

If you cook every day like I do, the Thermapen One is 1000% worth it. This thing is easy on the batteries. It lights up instantly when you pick it up and shuts itself off when you don't. It truly gives you an "instant" read. It is easy and clear to read the display no matter how you hold it. It's highly accurate. It's waterproof. It exhibits the kind of thoughtful design and engineering you want in an everyday hand tool.

In fact, that's the way to think about this. If you reach into the toolbox once a year to hang a picture on the wall, then you'll be fine with a lightweight hammer and level from the dollar store. If you're a master carpenter who works with tools all day, you notice the difference and find the difference in cost almost meaningless.
