For hiking you should probably get a Garmin watch like the Instinct, Fenix, Enduro or Vivoactive. The Edge computers are mainly geared for cycling.

I upgraded from 830 to 840 and found several other improvements. Garmin is updating the 840 with all the newest improvements that don't make it down to the 830.

but at the end of the day all I need to my Garmin to do is tell me how long I pedaled, how far I pedaled and how hard I pedaled.

Yup. You can get a cheap used one if that's all you need from a unit.

While I agree some of the improvements are quite useful, they are not necessary if you already have an 830. I'm impressed with what they have done and when my 830 starts to have issues with battery life or other problems I'll upgrade, but at this point I don't see the need.

I was able to get the Exchange (Military) to price match Kohls. No tax but no Kohls Cash...couldn't get them to price match Amazon on the 830 or 840 due to Amazon placing the words "LIMITED TIME" on the webpage. Could not believe Kohls has it at this price.

Pretty sure this is the lowest "base" price for an 840 I've seen since I started paying attention about a year ago. If you don't need/want a cycling computer, there's no reason to think about it, but if you'd actually use it, I think this is a very good deal, especially if you can combine it with gift cards or cash back. If nothing else, you can get another 5% off if you have a Freedom card and haven't hit the $1,500 PayPal purchase cap.
