Older versions of these are notorious for corrupting (info easily found if googled). I've personally had one fail on me. I work with many SSD drives at work and have seen these fail there as well. One of the IT guys at work advised to avoid these. I'd highly recommend the ones Samsung makes. We use those at work now. The Samsung ones we use exchange hands quite a bit, even travel across the world and are shipped across the States. No problems yet.

These drives used to have problems a few years/months back where people lost all data on drives. Not sure if it's fixed or not, but I'd be very hesitant if this particular model or at least not use this for something critical.

Thanks for your info. Is it firmware problem? Anyway. Good present for an enemy.

A buggy SSD drive beats the purpose of backup storage. Why even buy such a drive.

Seems like they have a firmware fix that addresses the issues. I'm going to buy and try for $40, I only use these for temporary storage anyway.

The 1TB capacity is highly reliable. I have the 1, 2, and 4. The 4 I just sold as "for parts" on eBay. The ones that had the issues are the 4TB. They claim they are fixed, but I have switched to using Crucial for 4TB. Costs only a little bit more, but both faster and more reliable.

There's a class action lawsuit that lists the 1,2 and 4 as being problematic. They prob just included the 1 and 2 for funsies.

I'm a data recovery tech and have recovered many of these. I see more of these SanDisk portable SSDs come in for recovery than all other types/brands combined.
Like all drives, they can suffer from various issues, but the main common problem with these is not something a firmware update will fix.
1 or a few of the chips become separated from the board and they are usually very difficult and delicate to repair / reattach due to underfill. (I suspect it's the underfill that's causing the problem, but I'm not sure). There are WD and SanDisk internal drives with the same chipsets that I never see come in, and the internal drives don't have the underfill.
It definitely affects all capacities. (Contrary to the other commenter's anecdotal experience, I see mostly 1TBs come in, but that's because they sell the most).
It's usually a PITA to recover from, though success rate is very high.

It's a super price for the SSD, but just make SUPER-sure you're making backups or are using it for unimportant data.
I'm not 100% sure that the ones on the shelves still have the problem, but they probably do, since it's been going on for many years without correction.

We stopped selling them as destination drives years ago when we realized the problem was widespread to protect customers. When a customer brings them in as a destination drive, I always warn them, and if it's unopened, I suggest they exchange it for a Samsung or Crucial.
All that said, this is half-price, so If I could buy them in quantity at this price, I'd be tempted to offer them as an option but with a very stern warning.

Why is this a fire deal when the drive fails? Don't people read the reviews?
