Like all drives, they can suffer from various issues, but the main common problem with these is not something a firmware update will fix.
1 or a few of the chips become separated from the board and they are usually very difficult and delicate to repair / reattach due to underfill. (I suspect it's the underfill that's causing the problem, but I'm not sure). There are WD and SanDisk internal drives with the same chipsets that I never see come in, and the internal drives don't have the underfill.
It definitely affects all capacities. (Contrary to the other commenter's anecdotal experience, I see mostly 1TBs come in, but that's because they sell the most).
It's usually a PITA to recover from, though success rate is very high.
It's a super price for the SSD, but just make SUPER-sure you're making backups or are using it for unimportant data.
I'm not 100% sure that the ones on the shelves still have the problem, but they probably do, since it's been going on for many years without correction.
We stopped selling them as destination drives years ago when we realized the problem was widespread to protect customers. When a customer brings them in as a destination drive, I always warn them, and if it's unopened, I suggest they exchange it for a Samsung or Crucial.
All that said, this is half-price, so If I could buy them in quantity at this price, I'd be tempted to offer them as an option but with a very stern warning.
