It's because this is a consumer laptop and most consumers don't care about numpads. However most consumers do care about having better speakers. And the best and easiest way to do this is to sacrifice the numpad, move the keyboard to the center so that the space at the sides can be freed up to put 2 large front firing speakers on, If you look up the product photos you'll see that's exactly what they did.
