yes, Costco's price already includes 2yrs, and I'm fine with just that. Of course you can still add applecare on top of it for the 3rd year as an addon even at Costco.
Rarely will a laptop crap out in year 2 either way. So rare especially apple.

I'm debating if MacBook Air 13 16GB/512GB or MacBook Air 15 16GB/256GB. My concern with the 16/256 of the 13 inch is there the GPU is 8 core instead of 10 core. Pretty much the same price right now. I'm planning on using it mostly for editing video. Any thoughts?

I have a Pro M2 that's still covered under AppleCare. I may have to upgrade and sell mine.

After watching numerous videos to determine whether Windows or Mac is better, I found that Windows is currently in a transition phase with many ARM-based chips not supporting various software. This led me to a crucial decision: should I go for the base version of the M4 MacBook Pro (MBP) or the M3 MacBook Air with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage?

Upon researching, I leaned towards the 14-inch M4 MBP. However, for high school and college use, it seemed like overkill. The M3 MacBook Air at $1100 offers a $300 saving, which is significant.

The reality is, there's no such thing as a "future-proof" laptop because technology evolves so rapidly. If the MacBook Air can't handle lightweight tasks like browsing and programming, then the efficiency and versatility of Apple's ARM chips would be pointless. Apple often tries to sell new models by adding an extra port or additional monitor support, which I find to be a rather gimmicky marketing strategy.

If you don't need MBP's power (for example, no need for video editing etc), go for the air for school use, it is so much more portable.

What was the issue with previous MBA with 256GB hard drives? Slow performance? Is that still true with the M3 ones?

The 16/256 is only $899. Worth it to go 16/512 for $200 more?
I would say yes. 256gb is too low a storage, even considering application sizes. Unless you are very disciplined at space management, 512gb is a minimum requirement. Although $200 is too much for the extra storage, that's what Apple charges. Unless you are a very light duty user(basic browsing and deal hunting), recommend going with 512gb, else you are gonna quickly run out of space even with apple's space management. Ofcourse you can get an external drive for photos/videos, which I guess most people can't do without today, but 256gb internal is just not enough/or won't be in another year IMO considering how fast space needs are growing.
