Most people (self included) do NOT need the M4 Pro chip. An M4 will be more than enough for most everyday tasks. But this is a solid deal for those who do need it.
Spec says incremental but you also have to compare MPro 14 12c vs 14c and GPU of 16 vs 20 (just 4 more but it helps) since there are different specs of M4 Pros.

GB 6 Metal GPU says 40% increase on Metal performance, that's a pretty nice change.

I only do LLM on the list of items you do.

My 14c/20GPU has performance similar to the M1 Max 32GPU on LLM.

That's a pretty decent speed increase up from the M3 regular air (8 GPUs) I was carrying (I skipped M3 Pro and M3 Max)

I can actually do local inference on code and now it's fast enough that I cannot read the code it's writing out line by line. M3 Pro at 40% slower may annoy me at this point now that I am used to the faster inference speed. I did try M3 Max but retuned the machine because I didn't want 16" and I didn't need inference speed as much at the time. 7B or 11B files load jus fine on my 24GB RAM machine. 32GB is too much.

you can test your M3 Pro.

I use ollama and wrote out 500 words story to test some of the models I use

12B mistral-small 18 t/s. -why is this so slow compared to 11B vision? no idea.
11B llama3.2-vision 38 t/s
7B llama3.1 43 t/s
7B qwen2.5-coder 42 t/s.
2B llama3.2 72 t/s
1B llama3.2. 124 t/s
Max is higher than Pro so if you don't need Pro you definitely don't need Max.

What about the max chip? Still don't need it, just for standard usage?

I gave my air to my kid and bought a pro and regret it. Too heavy, too thick and the extra power makes no practical difference.

Yeah the weight difference between the 13" Air and 14" Pro is very noticeable.

The key diff other than performance is that max can connect up to 4 external monitors while the m4 and pro can connect 2. That basically rules out the standard model for a lot of professional users use case

Thanks for pointing out the weight difference between the air and pro models. Our kid is heading to college and I'm just starting to look into these MacBook computers. I assume the Air model would be plenty for a college kid?

For a typical college kid (and most consumers), the MacBook Air is the laptop to get. You'll have to decide between the 13" and 15" screen sizes. (For high-end users, the Pro can have some advantages.)

One bummer with Apple is base storage on the Air is still 256GB. This is fine for college and office work, but could be a little limiting for anyone who deals with large media files. With an eye on long-term use, I'd pay for the 512GB option.

Do note however that the 15 inch Air weighs around the same as the 14 inch Pro does. So if it's weight that is a big concern, thats something for them to keep in mind.

Is 16GB enough RAM or should the college student go with 24GB?

Absolutely. My kid is in college and said the MBPro replacement should be an Air because of the weight. They walk and carry this staff all day long. Any of the 16GB RAM MB Air is plenty enough for college.

16GB RAM is enough, 256GB drive is also enough and get the smaller 13.8" size for college - for less weight and portability. The $750 deal that was going on on M2 is enough.

I got the MBP M3 pro from Costco for $1500 - 18 GB, 512 GB and still have a few days in my return window. Is this much faster for a $300 difference?
