They don't.

People just cherry pick the specs that have entered the non-technical realm of understanding so that they have something to complain about as laymen. The same thing happened with engine valve count on cars.

The base Android OS can function on 2GB of RAM and even less if you want to get skimpy.

The complaint from these laymen usually starts at not understanding that consumed memory is a good thing. When they see that the system has very little free memory available, they assume that it's exceeding its capacity and incapable of functioning. The truth is Android's memory management is pretty decent and functions no different than iOS or any other operating system in this regard. Free RAM is wasted RAM.

This is usually where the blame lies when people talk about a device being "slow", when in actuality, the eMMC is hundreds of times slower than the RAM.

Now, I'm sure there's some games out there that do demand a lot of memory. But they also require a faster processor and more storage, so this particular class of tablet wouldn't cut it regardless.
Also available (if anyone is interested): Refurbished 10.4" Onn. Tablet Pro 2023 w/ lower specs (64GB storage, 3GB RAM, MediaTek MTK 8768WA processor) for $44 here [ebay.com].

I wonder how this might work as a wall mounted control panel for a smart home. i.e. Home Assistant, Smartthings+ActionTiles, etc.

4GB Ram is the biggest limitation here, rest of the specs are decent for even a $100 tablet

how are these for kids 10 and under. basic games like Roblox and streaming Netflix? I have fire tablets for them now but Google family link doesn't work on them so I need a full android tablet.

This is the right price for me for the kids. Fire tablets slow down a lot over time and these should allow more control using Google family link, which doesn't work with fire tablets.

edit: just saw the issue about widevine yikes. not sure if this will work for their purposes.

And if you want an even MORE frustrating user experience than a 4GB or 3 GB tablet, here's a 2GB one for $26. vomit

I agree, 4GB is questionable for an Android tablet, anything less than that is unusably slow.
When did Android tablets get so resource hungry? They need 8 GB just to function? That's crazy.

Because they want Samsung or Google top tier tablets for the same price.

I was wondering the same. Perhaps, install a barebones OS without all the Google Apps and only the required smart home app.

I stopped using Family Link last year since Google barely supports it, so it does not work with things like Google Play Games, which syncs saves between devices, and does not allow at all any type of subscription purchases (which are required for most decent kid games out there). For example if you tried to sign up for Minecraft realms it will just error, or if you try to do a subscription purchase for Starfall. One off purchases work fine though.
There are years of complaints online about these issues but Google has no interest in maintaining Family Link so has never addressed them. Just the game syncing with Google Play Games is worth it for me to pay for a parental control app to not spend hours trying to copy application data from an old tablet to a new one when the kids old one dies or needs to be upgraded.
I ended up going with Kaspersky SafeKids, which is about as much of a pain to manage as Family Link was, but at least works with these basic features.
