November is generally the most beautiful time to go if you like nature, outdoors and general scenery but it's also among the most crowded. Late-December to early January has tons of fun things going on for New Year's, but it's cold and can be very crowded due to the extended days off end of Dec. Mid-February to mid-March has plum blossoms and is much less crowded than cherry blossom season, but is can be cold.
Late-march to mid-April is cherry blossom season, but everything is crowded but also good weather, maybe some rain here and there. Late-April to early-May has beautiful weather and a lot of flowers are in full bloom, but it's Golden Week so there are tons of domestic tourists. July and August are miserably hot and humid, but there are tons of festivals and high-altitude mountain routes are open. October has beautiful weather and is not usually too crowded, but it's too early for the fall foliage in much of the country.
Basically just avoid June if you can (rainy season), but even that isn't bad.
there's also an amex offer for $100 off (maybe $500? so add luggage, food, etc..) so add that to this deal and you have maybe cheapest tix ever!
Picked a few random dates from LAX -> NAR and opted for the "Value" package which includes the ability to choose a seat, a meal, and a checked bag (for both flights) and it came out to about $588 incl. taxes. Knock off the $100 credit from the AMEX offer and you're back to $488. Pretty solid deal.

Zip is good for bare bones travel with no bags. It's also good for their low cost lie flat business seats. However by the time you add bags and select seats it's usually more expensive than full service Asian carriers like ANA

It's almost like they planned it or something Smilie

We love traveling in late March and it's just way too common to see the jump in pricing hit around 3/18-3/20.

it's not b/c of spring break but cherry blossom season which starts usually end March; last yr there was a very good sale right after cherry blossom seasons (mid April).

I'm a bit confused. By default do you get a 7kg carry on? Or is that only added when you add the baggage add on?

Yes, you get 7kg for your carry-on whether or not you purchased a checked bag. And, it's also very likely your carry-on luggage will get weighed before boarding.

Ooh, this is tempting, I've got some peeps in Japan that I've been putting off visiting for a while. Not sure how the weather is in March, but I'll need to circle back on this after doing some research

I'll go and say hi for you... just looked at a FB post about old abandoned homes over there. I'd go back if I was younger and ambitious.. loved the country and people in the fifties and sixties
