For people subscribing for the first time, I'd recommend signing up as soon as the discount is live so that next year there's not much overlay in your subscription expiring and the discount going live again, and if you don't auto renew this year's sub you'd most likely be able to grab the discount next year too.
I haven't renewed in like 6 months so been waiting a long time for this

also OP should have provided this link to the announcement instead

https://blog.playstation.com/2024...eals-2024/
So no discount on renewals/extensions for existing subscribers, just "upgrades". Eff that.

I was a previous PS Plus Essential member that ended my membership in September due to the increased cost. But this deal totally worked for me as a former subscriber. I just signed back up for PS Plus Essential for $64. Thanks for the tip!

Can I use 4 gift cards from Costco to buy the membership? Is there any restriction on number of gift cards that you can use?

I lucked out and got it for the $63.99 due to my psplus membership expiring on 12/6/24. So double check if you're eligible, because it's not just for relapsed subscribers.

I haven't read the whole thread, but it seems if you have an active sub but have turned off auto renew (ie canceled), you'll get the discount offer to buy another year without upgrading.

Sorry if this is known or YMMV. I was able to extend my active sub (was set to expire on 1/1/2025) for 2 additional years of extra for ~$100 each.
How? I cancelled, no deal is there

The Gift card is redeemed for credit to your playstation wallet. It adds funds to your account.

Thanks for responding. I'll edit my post to make clear it's worth checking out but definitely YMMV.

I hate how customer retention is only a thing once it's too late -- why can't loyal customers be rewarded? Just give me a little reward for being an ultimate-tier customer for so many years šŸ™„

Last year when they hiked the price I put my foot down and said enough is enough and I dropped down to the most basic tier. I guess they got the hint because a month or so later Playstation emailed me an offer to upgrade to the top tier for only $30. I bit, but there's no shot I'm renewing this time around for full price.
It's become more about generating money now than it is about the gaming community. It's been that way for some time now. Pure greed.

To your point, the only time they offer us loyal customers anything is when we decide to cut off the flow of money rather than looking at who keeps them well funded for years and rewarding them for their loyalty. We all would be helping each other if we collectively step away and wait for them to scramble.

So if I am not mistaken, (please correct me if I am) isn't one of the benefits of all of the PS+ plans having automatic cloud backups of your PS console saves? It is my understanding on the PS5 you can't just backup your saves to an external media like a USB flash drive. I am mostly disinterested in the other benefits of the paid membership, but I feel like this is the only way to ensure I have backups of all of my game saves in case of console drive failure. Am I wrong in my belief, or do those of you w/o PS+ just hope you never have drive failure and lose all of your save files? Could I be backing up my saves in another manner? Thanks!
I could be mistaken, but I think it keeps cloud saves for a limited amount of time, just not sure what that timeline is.

Yes, it uses your account balance first.

Cloud game saves were the main reason I subscribed to PS+. So yes I think it's the one of the most valuable of the benefits, along with access to multiplayer. The freebie games are more of a bonus to me than a benefit. Talking about Essential PS+ only.
Sony's website used to say that your cloud game saves were guaranteed up to 6 months after your PS+ expires. But now it no longer says how long (or at least I couldn't find it).

I didn't have PS + for 1 yr and a few months, then resubscribed and all my save files were there even super old PS4 stuff from disc games. Not sure if this is the norm but other forums have similar experiences of saves being available more than 6 months after PS+ expiration.

From my understanding, PS4 game saves can be saved to an external drive but PS5 game saves are cloud only.

If you're concerned about PS5 backup, you could resubscribe every few months or so and do a game save dump.

I do not keep my Essential plan on auto-renew, I immediately cancel the plan as soon as I pay for the yearly sub. Today I checked to see what the cost is, since my plan expires at the end of the month. I have the current offer of 20% off, or $63.99($67.19 after taxes), for a full year of Essential again.

I have PS+ Premium active until 12/2/24, I've cancelled the auto renew so it officially expires on this day. I was hoping to downgrade to PS + essentials and take advantage of this offer. However, the other offers are greyed out and it only gives me an option to renew PS+ premium until 12/2/25 for $111.99. Maybe I'll stay on this hamster wheel for another year to take advantage of the PS portal cloud streaming…

Look how bogus PS is. I was in the end credits scene for RE7 Biohazard and the game acted like it crashed. Nope, as soon as the time struck, my ps plus was over and I can't finish the game with minutes to spare. What kind of horseshit is that.

And no discount for renewal. Yep this is the last straw, screw console gaming in general
