I did some research on Android custom OS for anyone interested in that.

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet 2018, 8th Gen (karnak?) supposedly has a LineageOS custom ROM, but it's an old version based on LinageOS 16/Android 9. It might also require minor hardware mod (shorting some pins) to do the first install. Actually it looks like there's also a LinageOS 20/Android 13 build but it has bugs.

Newer models don't have the boot-loader exploit needed for a full custom OS. There's always Fire Toolbox though.

Removing the amazon crud with Fire Toolbox so I can access google play and utilize my still functioning 2019 Kindle Fire 10 as a Touch Portal device was awesome. And then when I found out about making it a virtual nintendo DS with DraStic it became awesomer. I love my Kindle Fire.

Kindle Paperwhite (2021, 11th Gen) (S&D) is OOS. Oh well. I bought the Fire HD 10 2021 for $30 plus tax with the coupon FIRETEN. With Prime, free shipping.

Is it really worth buying a case for it? Probably not.

I just wonder if the hd 10 2021 would still be a good entry level tablet as a gift for someone who's never used a tablet before. Would it still be decently functional for very basic tasks? I think I would use the declutter firebox tool on it
