Open the side access panel, remove filter, wash filter, reinsert filter, put panel back on.

So we've got one of these (Aprilaire 1820) that has been going for a few years. The last one broke after about five years. We got it replaced under warranty but this one won't be covered. The price is obviously insanely right but would it be okay to buy one now and hold onto it for a couple of years until we need it? Would any of the parts "go bad"?

I assume the warranty would be based on purchase, not installation date, so that would be a downside.

It depends on how you intend to install the unit based on your climate, home construction, and needs.

If you want to just place this into a basement to dry out the space and let it rip, the only consideration is dealing with the condensate coming from the unit. This deal includes a pump, so you can drain to a sink as opposed to just using gravity to drain to a floor drain. It uses a regular power plug, and there are controls directly on the unit. Then this thing becomes no more complicated than a portable dehumidifier, but will blow one of those away when it comes to performance.

If you want to use this to tie into your HVAC system, it becomes a fair bit more complicated, especially with regards to controlling the unit since you may want to use an external remote to control the unit, or an HVAC thermostat with that can handle controlling a dehumidifier with one of its AUX wires. Even still, there are multiple different ways of tying a whole-home dehumidifier into an existing HVAC system depending on those factors previously mentioned, as well as where your air handler is.

This video goes over a bunch of the various ways a whole-home dehumidifier can be installed.

I installed both of ours. I tied the one in our crawl space into the return box and blower plenum, which both had flat surfaces. That was pretty simple. I had my hvac guy tie in the one in the attic because it was coming out of and into round ductwork. I think he charged me a couple hundred bucks.

I have two of the older 70 pint units installed, and they remove about 35 pints per day each. I know 70 is under ideal conditions , but I expected more. Good units, though, and they certainly beat emptying dehumidifier buckets!

I also installed both of ours as we have two separate geothermal systems. It's some work but not complicated if you have space. Echoing others that these are incredible machines and I never expected to see them on sale. Buying a future "extra". Damn you SD!
