I'm not system admin, network person, OS specialist or a penetration expert. I'm a long time hobbyist who has a goal of not being the lowest hanging fruit when it comes to security.
I read reviews of software and try to use the sw rated most effective with a light footprint.
It isn't an either/or proposition; Windows defender runs in parallel with 3rd parties. Every SW has risks that slip through. Run two solutions and now you're ven diagram of overlapping security holes decreases.
If it was just me, I'd be less inclined, but I have a household with not so savvy Internet users. 3rd party software is actually gaudier and more obvious... popping up with warnings as if trying to justify their existence. This gets noticed by my family and causes them to stop and (hopefully) learn. I think those warnings may have prevented contamination at some point over 25 years, but I don't know. I haven't had a security beach (virus, Trojan, phishing scam, worm, email contact exploit, etc) on my PCs /network ever. (To my knowledge & knock on wood.)
The performance hit is a thing, but I'm the only one in my family taxing my micro/video processors & memory and I've found solutions I can live with.
For me, 10 to 20 cents/mo to likely reduce risk on a PC for 2 years is okay with me.
I don't feel the need to be extreme on either side of this argument. That is just where I landed and I'm open to new information to change my approach.

Also can anyone on Windows 11 comment on how efficient this is compared to Windows Defender?

My laptop is few year old and bitdefender overloads it, performance becomes slow, battery dies quickly, and fan start making noise.
I was previously using Malwarebytes without any issue, also on sale: https://slickdeals.net/f/17910438-1-year-malwarebytes-premium-software-3-devices-digital-delivery-9-99?src=rcm_disc
