Be wise. Always check the price of replacement toner slash ink cartridges before purchasing a printer. Over the life of the printer your toner is going to cost you more, than the printer itself.

edit: This printer seems reasonable for replacement toner.

There are third party compatible toners as low as $90 for all four in Amazon.

I am tired of ink jets breaking and drying up. At this cost I think this is not bad to try, ordered one.

Same specs, yes, same price no… For the same price just a duplex printer https://a.co/d/ai8PcL4
It says Laser quality but it's not laser printer if I understood the specs?!

Had this model. All aftermarket toner on Amazon suck. It will last you maybe 100 prints before fading and streaking. Don't let most reviews fool you. Finally got rid of it and replaced with an older Color HP Laserjet. Generics on that one is much better. Canon original toner is great but is $350 for a set.
I had a comparable Canon. Tried to go with generics like you and the fading and steaking ruined the printer. Now looking for a replacement printer. Which printer did you go for?

Prime Days I got the MF656Cdw for $15 more. Feeling better about that deal.

Based on my experience I would not mess around with third party toner. A crappy aftermarket toner can destroy your laser printer. The replacement cost of the printer, especially not on sale, is high. Don't play with fire.

Even though toner costs more than ink cartridges, when you do the math, the price per page is less. So people saying the toner costs more than the printer are making an emotional argument rather than a logical one. With many ink jets, the cost of replacing cartridges is also more than the printer. That's just life.
Agree 100% with this. If you intend to get generic Toner it will likely destroy your printer (streaking too horrible to actually want to use the printer and fading)

Laser printers are called that because they use a laser to create an electrostatic image on a photosensitive drum, which then picks up toner that gets redeposited onto the page and then fused by going through heated rollers. The laser is deflected for scanning by a rotating prismatic mirror.
This was initially the only practical way to create the latent electrostatic image onto the drums, however alternative, more efficient techniques have been developed later, the most popular consisting in using an LED imaging strip. This does the exact same thing as the laser without the mechanical complexity and reliability issue of the laser and rotating mirror — it just was not technically feasible back in the 1980s when the first consumer laser printers hit the market.
Is it "laser"? No. There is no laser in it. Does it create the picture by electrostatically depositing toner onto the page then fusing it into it with heat? Yes.

I bought this printer from the Amazon prime deal a few months ago for about $15 more. This printer is pretty huge so keep that in mind before ordering. The UI is the worst thing about it but connecting it to wifi is pretty simple and make sure you setup a username on the printer itself. There are tons of step by step instructions on how to create the features you want like scanning to your email directly which anyone competent can easily follow. I am far from an IT expert and was able to configure it to our households needs.

The functionalities are plentiful and once configured, it's bullet proof and works well. My 5 year old figured out how to print her favorite things from her iPad wirelessly and despite over 350 color prints and counting, the starter toner remains at 100% which I find incredible. So far so good. However, there are thousands of reviews that recommend oem toner to extend the life of the printer so if the cost is prohibitive, you may want to look for a monochrome brother printer. All else considered, it's an incredible value and has nearly the same features as our $12k multi function office machine. Just my 2 cents. Feel free to reach out with questions.

Edited to include image quality - let me just say that this is not a photo quality printer so take that as you will. It prints incredibly fast and my daughter's Disney character prints are impressive from what I could tell.

One more edit to discuss how loud the printer is - that part surprised me! It's not a supercharged v8 loud but when it's printing, this thing makes a loud fan noise. This is not a deal breaker for us because it lives in our home office and we print wirelessly to it but I would not advise putting it in a central location where you can hear it, the noise would be distracting. If you can handle that, the value proposition and functionality for the price considerably outweighs the old school UI and fan noise in my opinion.

You need to own a laser printer before you speak on one. I have owned the canon mf634cdw printer since 2017. I had it packed up for over two years when we moved, so when I finally got back around to using it again. I got it out the shed, plugged it in and started printing right away. There were no issues with the print quality from being stored all that time. It was worked just as good as it did on day one. It was like I had never stopped printing with it to begin with. The good thing about laser printers, is they're not ink based. They are of course powered ink. They don't dry up like regular ink cartridges, as their dry to begin with. That is the great feature about toner. Let an ink base printer setup for two years and see what happens when you try to print. Laser printers are for fine detail and sharper text. They do print color photos, that are good, just not as colorful and bright as with most photo or most ink jet printers. But, then again, that is not what these printers are for. I have owned this printer since 2017 and it still works as if it were new. Now, to the only downside of these printers, if you could even call it that, as these were not built for these kinds of pictures to begin with. You cannot use glossy photo paper with these printers, so that is where you will lose so much color depth in photos. I own a canon photo printer for that. These are for people that need to print and print fast with worry free printing. Also, to them that state toner is too expensive. To completely refill all my toners, is around 120 dollars. It may sound a little high but think about this. The toner will last 10x longer than ink-based cartridges, and with the longevity of laser printers, you will save money over ink printers hands down.

Ok printer but the firmware will drive you insane. I've had Brother, Ricoh, Canon and HP and I'm only getting another Brother now. All the others suck.
I like Brother printers and I have them all over my office, but the newer models (inkjet) won't recognize 3rd party ink. They used to, but the latest firmware's (I suspect at least) have made it a no-go. It sucks cuz I bought mutli-packs of ink and midway thru the machine stopped recognizing them.

If your current machine still detects 3rd party ink be sure to turn off automatic firmware updates just in case.

Technically, it is an LED Printer, but there is no real difference in the results. A huge portion of printers that people call "Laser Printers" are actually LED printers these days, and this isn't anything new. They both do basically the same thing: Shine light on a drum to charge (or remove charge), the drum picks up toner, transfers to the paper, then it is melted onto the paper with the fuser. Here is a video showing a very similar Brother printer, and discussing the differences/similarities in technology (around 9-minute video). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_saDCwsB9Ww

Is this one of those printers where if you usually only print in B&W, it'll fail to print if one of the color toner cartridges is out?

Neah. None of those printer manufacturers make ink. They buy the material from the same company that makes generic ink and slap their labels on with their cartridge. Of course, they buy a quality ink and the lower quality ink flood to the Amazon market.

Brother printers are the best for toner cost. They accept generic ones and they are really cheap with excellent quality !!

I have a similar Canon printer without the double-side printing and just the flat-bed scanner. I bought it 18 months ago for $225 from Walmart. The original toner lasted from a year to 18 months. I replaced the OEM toner with genuine toner purchased on eBay. It was near expiration and was past it's use date when I finally used many. So far, it still prints great. So consider buying nearly expired, genuine toner for less on eBay.

print·er ˈprin-tər
: one that prints: such as a a person engaged in printing
: a device used for printing especially : a machine for printing from photographic negatives
: a device (such as an inkjet printer) that produces printouts

But seriously, I still print labels and the occaisional greeting card. I think most people fit in that category. Infrequent use, hence why I want to move away from my old Brother inkjet MFC that is constantly throwing errors on the input tray (sensor bad).

Replacing a semi-working inkjet with a laser color is cheaper in the long run. I have to run the clean cycle about every time due the infrequent use as well as some of the cartridges clog and dry out before I have a chance to finish them.

I am concerned about the reviews. I've had Brother printers for the last 20 years no issues other than current one throwing paper feed errors.
OK, I never do that. I can scan everything and send it E-Mail. One time a year maybe I have to print something to send to gov't because that's how efficient they are. I do agree that InkJet stuff is completely lame. I can see why artists still put together canvas, but other than that I see absolutely no reason to print anything. Can you tell I'm not an artist?

Yeah. I have hobbies which I need labeling. I did pull the trigger on this. My Brother is driving us insane. Always showing a ghost paper jam. I tracked it down to a sensor but not worth trying to repair.
