Quality is not the same as OEM plus you can't see the ink levels so the print quality gets worse when the ink runs out.
I agree with this statement. Replacement tonner prints really bad. I tried two different off brand toners and had to get original to get perfect prints.

There are third party compatible toners as low as $90 for all four in Amazon.
I have two of these printers (or very similar iterations). Third party toners have been a disaster. I've tried three different "guaranteed" brands - the highest rated I could find. They all start streaking, fading, gunking up the printer in short order with regular use, just like many people here are saying. The "guarantees" are painful - though not impossible - to hold the sellers to.

Canon toners are pristine and have never caused me issues. But the cost is extortionate.

I'm sure it's not the toner itself, but the quality of the filling/re-filling process.

I'd say I won't buy Canon again, but don't know if there are truly better options.

I actually have this device at home, used approx. 6 months. It's really good all-in-one, only downside is toner price

Love the cost adjective "extortionate"!
So accurate!

Please stop using the word expensive.... In the printing world you Gage things by cost per print. How much does it cost you to print one page when you buy the replacement toner!!! I am a lifelong it guy who has used HP exclusively but what I can tell you is that this printer uses the same exact cartridge as a comparable HP m428. The cartridge is exactly the same to the t except for the microchip. From my experience in The last 5 years is that HP works amazing if you're using their ink but these canon printers work very well with third party Ink. The replacement parts like maintenance kit are Less expensive for the Canon than for HP.

I bought the 656 yesterday and am loving it so far. Also I learned my lesson on not using OEM toner and won't ever buy third party again. I have a very nice Brother color laser also and it worked great until I used 3rd party toner. I replaced the black first and it was fine, then two other colors and it was fine but once I replaced the last OEM toner in there it went to hell. Colors off, just a disaster. I am hoping once these third party ones are done if I replace it with OEM toner again it will fix itself. What we really need on here are deals on OEM toners for these printers.

You'd be surprised at how many medical forms still are sent via fax. In many cases, the only alternative is snail mail.
Faxing is also good for things like correspondence with the IRS. Gets to them immediately and you have a record of the transmission. Faxing is quite useful.

Why are there so many similar looking models from canon?

Canon seems to have figured out a way to make only their toner work with their color laser printers. Third party toners invariably cause banding and streaking, if not immediately then after a while. Avoid Canon for color laser.

Brother printers are the best for toner cost. They accept generic ones and they are really cheap with excellent quality !!
Okay then . Please recommend which brother is best model that can accept 3rd party toners.

FWIW, this one was $279 yesterday and has full duplex scanning. It is back up to $349, but I suspect it will drop again.

Why a Canon color laser drops the print speed to 22ppm from its black/white version's 40ppm (mf445dw). It's regretful to have such a drop.
Or anyone can suggest a similar fast print color laser printer that can match (or even close) to 40ppm?

Thanks.

I'd get the 656 for duplex scanning.
