look up lofta, just did it last year. Paid about $150 oop for the home test. Pretty smooth process, you do a quick preinterview with a PA/MD, they send out a kit. you send it back and depending on the results you schedule a quick call with a sales person and they send you the rx. You can then take it anywhere or shop at lofta for a cpap. They will also PM other prices if you find anything cheaper. The whole process probably took about 2 weeks for me, from getting the first consultation to having my cpap in hand.
Do you snore like a freight train do you awake in the middle of the night gasping for air then you might need it. Schedule yourself a sleep study quickly, if left unchecked can lead to heart issues, reduced life expectancy
If you think you snore and aren't getting a good nights sleep get a cheap digital recorder and record yourself sleeping. I did and it was scary. Scheduled a sleep study next day and have been using a cpap ever since.

Could you put this into perspective? What would be considered excessive hours (enough to avoid)?
You want something that someone got and didn't tolerate and gave up on. For excessive I'd probably say ~800 hours (roughly 100 nights) but if someone is selling they probably tried it for a few weeks sporadically and not the entire night. Would expect to find many with less than 200 hours given how high the non compliance rate is.

Bonus points if they got all of their supplies refilled repeatedly on schedule and never used them.

Just do not buy a used Respironics - they're not allowed to be sold in the states but I would not doubt that some people would try to sell them used.

How does the prescription required work here? As not asking for one when placing the order.

Thanks. The mini is NOT covered by any insurance that I've ever seen and it's perfect for travel.

Yep, me here. The test shows I have severe sleep apnea. I got one similar to this covered by insurance. It's crazy how these are so expensive.

If you snore, then you have sleep apnea and will need this.

I know I snore, but then I went to th doc. Paid 599 bucks out of pocket for me to fail the take home test just so they have me come in for an in person study. I wish I could just get it and roll with it.
Order from Lofta the sleep study test. It's under $200 (look for coupons).

Anyone know why i might need this?
Well I don't use this exactly but I use a machine that looks identical to it just that it cost $6,000 called an adaptive servo-ventilator. What got me on it was a motorcycle accident at 23 where my noggin smacked the road at 93 mph resulting in damage to my respiratory drive while sleeping. They started me on cpap but soon realized I needed a ventilator to breath for me when I'm sleeping. Im 28 now. Funny thing I was heading to the hospital for my grave shift as I'm a critical care nurse. I instead ended up a patient on the very unit where I was supposed to be the charge nurse on that night.

Other examples is narrow airway, obesity, opioid pain medicine use, just to name a few

... I asked to skip the recommended sleep study.
Same here; I just asked the doc if I could skip it. Auto CPAP pretty much makes determining the pressure redundant anyway.

I'm diabetic, and was overweight. Ozempic fixed a lot of problems, including the sleep apnea, and I no longer use the CPAP. Not all sleep apnea is caused by obesity, but a lot of it is, and I suspect these drugs are playing hell with the CPAP business. Hence the sales.

Does this come with mask and all other accessories or just the machine?
Just the machine. I am not certain a tube comes with it since mine was delivered by a DME.

I also had to pay something like $200 for a hot plate in order to warm the water.

No matter what route you go, be sure to learn about OSCAR and look at it with folks from Reddit or the CPAP forums. For me at least the NP that I was seeing didn't even know about OSCAR. I knew this was going to be my last visit because she said "well not all people feel better on CPAP but you are getting the benefits". This is a load of BS. I had to lower my max pressure (and still working on the right number with folks on Reddit) to lower my Central Apneas. It has helped and I am only 3 days into it. Don't give up. I had a hard time figuring things out from masks to actually falling asleep with it.

Anyone have two 10s or 11s , one for travel/backup? I have the air res mini and absolutely hate it even if I sleep on my own because of how loud it is. I would much rather deal with the hassle of carrying the full sized machine. If I'm with others it is absolutely unbearable too.

Since airlines let us carry it for free, it is annoying but I can't seem to find a decent alternative that is quiter and easier to travel with than the air res mini that is potentially compatible with my air res masks.

I've used this machine for a year now, plant of adjustments available to make sure you get a good night sleep.
