Chipset: RTL92100

From what I know, this is still the best, most efficient, coolest temp, and fastest chipset for these types of budget m.2 enclosures. I purchased this in March 2021 for $20 and it's been great, zero complaints. At $11, this is a great price.

2nding this opinion. Purchased mine in May 18 2022 for $23 (bought in UK amazon) and it's been working great for me to this day.

jms581 is the best. RTL is actually the cheapest one 😳 But the performance difference is really tiny. The difference is in the power consumption

Also, a fun fact: RTL, ASM, JMS are all designed by companies in Taiwan🙃

How large is the speed difference between this and a TB4 enclosure in reality? I r declined to pay the storage upgrade in my Mac Mini.

There's also a Ugreen enclosure on sale for $16. It has the RTL9210 chip as well. Is it worth the extra $5?

Big usually 40 vs 10 Gbps. Still fast enough but I'd get a tb enclosure if you intent to use it that way

pretty big actually. If you want to really make the M4 shine, you would need TB4 and also higher end memory chip. Theoretically it is 4X, but in reality it can be more.

I want to build my own NVME external drive but I'm not sure what I need to look for to make sure I get the fastest speeds that my PC's I/O cn support.

I have one port that's USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, which I believe has 20 Gbps speeds. What NVME would support that, gen 3 or gen 4? And the enclosure would likely not be the one here, since it's 3.1 gen 2 speeds, 10 Gbps, correct?

Or is my planned drive and enclosure overkill for someone who wants to use it for a mix of backing up a Mac using Time Machine and storing large video files of TV shows?

I don't think you understand how fast the speeds are we are talking about. An external 10Gbps nvme enclosure transfers data at around 900MB - 1GB per second in the real world. That's faster than internal SATA III speeds. That is more than enough for anything short of the most fringe needs. Backing up a few files, even large ones, here and there is nothing for those speeds. Unless you are dealing all day long with large, lossless video files like Apple ProRes or Huffyuv format, there aren't really a lot of other scenarios where it would make sense to pay $100 or so for a thunderbolt speed enclosure.

I have bought quite a few SSD enclosures over the past 3 years and this one definitely worth the money after serving over 2 years as my TimeMachine backup drive.

10Gbps: this is probably the best one, as pricer ones doesn't give you anything more.
20Gbps: waste of money if you use it on a Mac as they will be running at 10Gbps, if you use a PC there maybe a case to get one of those.
40Gbps: 40Gbps NVME external enclosures are tricky, most of them has a fan to avoid overheating and boy they are noisy in the midnight. You want to avoid ORico's 40Gbps SSD enclosure (the plastic transparent one) as they bake your SSD. There are passive cooling ones that are good, but they are heavy as bricks, most of the time you don't need that speed.

"Dear customer,
Thank you for your letter.

If you have any question, please feel free to contact us.

I ordered one of these two years ago. It's still one of my favorite portable enclosures and I carry it in my bag daily. It is fast, and extremely light in weight -- the bottom of the enclosure is plastic! I was kind of disappointed about that when I opened the package. It was very light and only the top part is metal, which acts as the heat sink. I put a short SSD in it and the heat sink did heat up very well. I highly recommend it to anyone who has an SSD lying around and needs an enclosure.
