I just bought 2 8TB for $169 each because Capital One Shopping app told me I'd get 30% off!
That cashback better show up in the 3 months it takes to get a credit.

Slickdeal lesson here: DO NOT USE CAPITAL ONE SHOPPING app!! It's a scam and they don't guarantee anything!!

I just bought a security camera system that included an NVR for storage and I'm looking to increase the capacity. Would this work for that? Sorry for the noob question if this is considered common knowledge

Thiese new drives are not slow, just slower than 7200 rpms. You could still easily saturate a 1gbit link with these. Some folks like me prefer the lower noise levels.

WD red plus are lower rpms till 8TB. 10TB and higher they're 7200.
It's not so much the transfer speed that makes them slow for a file server, it's the spin up and seek times which are noticably higher than 7200 RPM drives. The bigger cache of the newer drives won't help with that.

Thanks OP. I have an old 3TB red drive from a deal years ago that has all my Plex media on it. I'm about 40GB from filling it. Ended up getting two of the 6TB drives. Should last me years before I fill them up.

If I buy an external enclosure, is this going to be better than the WD Elements external drive on the other deal: https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/1026939 ?

Wish they'd bring back the $200 16TB Ironwolf Pros. Doesn't look like that deal is ever coming back. Was a heck of a deal last BF/CM.

i don't know too much about the WD external but would imagine what's inside is a normal consumer drive vs these red NAS drive which tend to be more durable. and this deal seems cheaper.
also it'll be entirely dependant on the quality of the enclosure that you opt for.

As a local backup drive depending on the enclosure you get, yes. The WD Elements SE external drives are 2.5" drives and only come with a one-year warranty vs 3-year for the WD RED 3.5" drives. Plus you have an enclosure that can be used with any another drive.

The standard Red drive is SMR, which is not designed for all day writing. Red Plus is CMR, which would work, but I bit the bullet and paid extra for Purple since it's specifically designed for NVRs and the constant overwriting.

I have one of these ZZ 8TB mixed with some older WD Red Pros in a Synology DS918+. I'm using link aggregation to get 2Gbps to the Synology from my 2.5Gbps PC. Even with the slower drive in the SHR array, it's at or close to soaking the network the entire time on 50GB transfers. I don't have an NVMe cache in the Synology.

I bought a NAS this year so I need some WD red drives for it. Anybody know if buying them on the day of Black Friday will get me the best deal vs any of these pre-black friday deals? Don't want to miss my chance. Not sure what a good price per GB is for these. I was thinking of getting them directly from WD on Black Friday thinking that may be the best deal possible. Thoughts?

I have used it many times and very rarely had any issues. In case they make the cashback ineligible, just email them and they will add it back.

It shows up if it's valid a day or two later. It's usually pretty good and some sites get insane rebates. Ive had the same experience with all the cash back sites where a shopping trip doesn't get recognized for whatever reason. Just as long as you have use for the gift cards.
It's been a week and it's not showing. I also bought an otterbox for my iPhone as they emailed me with a 30% off that was 6 weeks ago and that's not showing either.

When I asked them they said "our offers are not guaranteed and you should read all the small print for exclusions." Despite the fact THEY emailed ME that specific offer, appt it may NOT be valid?! wtf?!

They also said I can't raise it as an issue until 3 months after!

Scam!
