I had a steam deck lcd and I upgraded to this when it first came out. I gave my steam deck to my oldest son.
If your primary purpose is on the go gaming, the steam
Deck is better due to battery life and steamos is pretty great. The only real downsides are some game incompatibility, the screen on the deck is good but not great, and the deck has a 1 gen older apu. The deck also cannot be used with an eGPU.
If on the go is secondary then the Go is an upgrade. The battery life is meh for on the go but I primarily dock my Go to an eGPU and sometimes play portable. The Go is more capable as a desktop replacement. It has 2 usb 4 ports and a really nice screen (but no vrr). There also aren't any game incompatibility issues. If I miss Steam os I run Steam in big picture mode on my Go and it's fine.
For under $500 I think the Go is a steal. 🤷 ♂️

This vs steam deck? Own a steam deck LCD and love it already
If you already have a steam deck, and especially if you're using a enjoy SteamOS, this wouldn't be a significant upgrade for you. This is windows 10/11 only. Unless the detachable controllers are a must (i.e. you bring this to a place where you can do "couch co-op" with the detachable controllers), I would stick with that until the technology gets better. (Better form factors, better controls, lighter wait, better screen, etc). Steam deck is still the goldilocks of these handheld gaming computers.

Oh tempting. I'm not that interested on gaming on the go, would mostly game docked at home or plugged in at a hotel. OTOH, I do have an old RTX 3060 card sitting around that I could throw into an eGPU for added power when at home too. Intriguing...
I really like the screen size of the Legion Go, but the whole thing is king of big, plus some other quirks with it. I picked up a ROG Ally Extreme open box excellent for $340 from Bestbuy last week, and I do like it a lot, but wish the screen size was bigger in the same footprint. I picked up a grip case for the Ally is it feels great in hand, plus I upgraded it to a 2TB storage, so I guess I will just go with it for now until the next generation devices drop in a year or two. Each of these handhelds currently has unique drawbacks that I wish someone could get right. Basically an Ally X with a bezel-less 8" OLED VRR display similar to the Retroid Pocket 5/Odin Portal would be an almost perfect device.
Few thoughts and observations on this device for those considering it.
The screen size is awesome. But the performance subpar. Tried the same game with the same settings back to back on this and my ROG Ally and the Ally performed better. Also navigating windows was at times laggy. The unit had a faded spot on the screen that was defective so maybe there's more defects with it and that wasnt the standard performance. I have another one I picked up to replace the bad one that I have yet to open.
The placement of the "start" button on the bottom left can get annoying to remember.
There also appears to be some weirdness with the control mappings. In a certain game I was testing running with RT or A and turning right with the stick cancels the run. Turning left does not. My ROG ally does not have this problem. This may be something easily fixable but annoying when it doesn't work out of the box.
Finally, these things have been sitting. My first unit was a 1 TB from Best Buy that said date of manufacture was December 2023. Second unit was a 512 from Amazon which I didn't open but the outer box says date of manufacture was November 2023. Final unit that I intend on using was another 1 TB from Best Buy that finally had a 2024 date. January 2024.
At this price it's definitely as good value. I've got 5 of these Windows handhelds now and I'll say it's the weakest out of the bunch for actual handheld "Go" portability. Just too bulky and cumbersome to hold. But it has a large beautiful screen and built it stand that make it perfect for being semi-docked "no Go". Just put the controllers away for good and use it as a tablet with a wireless kb and Xbox controller in a bag. It's actually really slender and more portable that the other handhelds without its dumb detachable controllers. No need for a special shaped hard case - it just slips in to any kind of flat bag pocket. I've used it as my PC on vacation and it was great. 2 USB4 ports, large enough screen for desktop viewing, and a GPD G1 eGPU. I was good to go with a full PC gaming setup that fit in a 10in toiletry bag. I'd say this is cheap enough to be a good alternate buy even if you were only looking for a laptop.
I was really concerned about the lack of VRR when I got mine but I haven't found tearing to be a problem at all. Granted I am not playing the very latest AAA games mostly Forza, Mass Effect and ESO since I got it so the experience could be different with latest games.
The key is to target a frame rate that is divisible by the 144hz and lock to that frame rate.
And with 800p being integer scaled to 1600p native screen resolution you can render 800p, integer scale to 1600p and black frame insertion to hit high frame rates.

Which other 4 windows devices do you have?
