Just how are they inferior? XM4 and XM5 are on a downward trend in terms of ANC performance since the XM3. I've owned 2 XM3s i used daily for years. XM5 relies a lot on passive cancellation at this point

That's fair that you feel that way but objective tests from independent reviewers show that the XM3 has the highest ANC (active noise cancellation) performance. The XM5 relies more on passive sound blocking so it's reasonable if you hear less overall noise but it's not due to ANC.

I've tried all 3 as well. I still have my two old XM3s after 6 years of continuous use but have been getting new Bose pairs now.
