Best to just wait for the next generation and then you'd probably need to move up to a 8900 XT if there will be such a thing or a nVidia 4070 TI Super or 5070 for an upgrade over a 6800 XT to be worthwhile.
This chart of benchmarks is a must-review before anyone buys a video card: https://www.tomshardwar

1080 Ultra / 1440 Ultra / 4K Ultra / wattage
7800 XT: 129.3 / 105.8 / 62.3 / 263W
6800 XT: 122.7 / 99.0 / 57.9 / 300 W
The 7800 XT is about 7% faster and uses less power, but it's not enough of an improvement to make upgrading from a 6800 XT to a 7800 XT worthwhile.
I'm guessing the answer is probably a Yes. The 7800 XT >> 7700 XT and the extra speed is worth the extra price over the (overpriced, IMHO) 7700 XT's, especially at $420 for a 7800 XT.

I guess it depends on how valuable $120 is to you and how long you plan to keep it and what you want to do with it.
Arguably in terms of utility received per dollar you're probably better off with the 6750 XT as you won't always be using the increased power of the 7800 XT. (You're wasting the money spent on the 7800 XT relative to the 6750 XT when you surf the Internet or play an older game.)
Just for a few years and at 1080p and 1440p? I'd probably get the 6750 XT. If the goal is to hold onto the card for several years and skip as many new video card generations as possible and play the newest most demanding games at 1440p, 4K, and use VR then I'd get the 7800 XT.
Personally, if I had to choose between a $300 6750 XT and a 7800 XT, I'd probably go get the 7800 XT, but that's just me.
