I've had this the last two years paired with the G502 Plus[amazon.com]. I use the plastic hard top though it also has a fabric soft top in the box. Haven't ever had to charge my mouse

I use it with the same mouse but with the fabric top. For anybody wondering it usually keeps your mouse charged at 75-85% or so. You cannot charge more than one mouse at a time.

Explain how a wire is ideal for 99 percent of use cases please
It's definitely not. With that said, I don't have to charge my wireless mice very often either. About once every 6 months I leave it plugged in overnight and that's it. So, this product is nice to avoid that or for heavy gamers that will burn through battery much faster (I do productivity / design work). Necessity for gamers and nice luxury for others is probably where this fits.
I'm hoping someone chimes in with a cheaper alternative. I have the 502x and it would be nice to not have to even think about charging it, but I don't want to pay this much for convenience(but I might).
I have seen you can get alternative pucks to enable regular wireless charging, but I forget the details and if it would actually save $.

The lengths people will go to not use a wired mouse despite it still being the ideal solution 99% of the timeā¦.
The wire gets in the way and new wireless tech has no discernible lag. Ask the pros. I own a g502x lightning and g pro super light. They're both absolutely incredible and great for gaming and graphic design.
