The ads. They need subscribers to sell advertising. The subscription price is just to hook you in and potentially get you to renew at the normal rate as well.

Correct. Ads are based on copies sold and there could be a subsequent audit ability to raise or lower the cost based on projections vs actual sales. Separately, they hope to catch you on renewal. Read the fineprint carefully and remember to either cancel in advance or contact them about their best then offer before it renews. I do this with my cable bill. ALWAYS speak to the retention or cancellation department if there is one. You get their best offers usually only from them.
