I fully agree with the sentiment of seeing what's in them with the clear totes. However, the chemistry to make them transparent also makes the plastic brittle and prone to cracking. The non clear plastic remains more pliable and resistant to destructive kids and extreme temperatures. These are more worth it if durability > convenience.

I left one out in the sun for 4 months and after a powerwashing it looked brand new again. Definitely picking up more

why they are measuring this in quarts is beyond my understanding. it's the same 27 gallons totes as home depot has.

FWIW, the Home Depot totes, while 27G, are actually different dimensions than these Lowe's totes.
Only really an issue if you need to nest them for storage, or swap lids.

Where to find large inexpensive clear totes?

Well...technically they're both 27 gallons, so that's correct.
However, the dimensions are different so the lids aren't interchangeable, nor can you nest the HDX and Lowes totes together.

HDX 15.2 x 19.6 x 28.5
Lowes 14.3 x 20.6 x 30.6

The office depot 27 gallon greenmade clear ones seem just as durable as the black ones to me.

I can not speak to the chemistry but the clear totes are the only ones that have cracked on me. I think they are OK for smaller boxes you might keep on shelves but do not work for me in the larger sizes.

There are centainly clear plastics that will crack, but there also clear plastics that are surprisingly tough. The IRIS WEATHERPRO totes are an example. I have a bunch of the Greenmade black totes from Costco and also some of the IRIS Weatherpro, and I give the Weatherpro and edge when it comes to durability. Sadly it also costs 2x as much for a much smaller container.

Same size. Costco is lower quality. I have 10 or 15 of Lowes and tried Costco last week. Broke upon lifting loaded the first time.

These totes can withstand a bomb going off while thr ones you listed Crack the second you drop them at a weird angle.

It's not hard to just get tape and write what you put in it then put it on the face of the tote.

I can certainly understand where you're coming from, but I always feel that the plastic on those clear totes degrades quicker and is flimsier off the bat. My mom bought some and I warned her they were going to end up in the landfill after a year. She left one outside in the Texas heat for a few months and sure enough it started cracking and had to be thrown away.

I also kind of like opaque totes because it keeps the clutter out of sight. I've been using the 18-gallon Sterilite ones for over 15 years (always gray) and love how clean those look. They're strong enough I can stack them 3-high, with about 30 lbs of junk in each, on average.

Have a couple of these black/yellow ones in 40-gallon to store longer/bulkier items and they seem to hold up well in moderate heat/sun in my loft area that gets a little toasty sometimes.

Interesting note - thanks. I would assume the quality between the two are more or less comparable. Can anyone comment on this?

I'm also curious if anyone knows if one can handle more vertical stress over the other. The HD one looks like it has some...."ribs" if you will...that might make it a little more sturdy when stacking vertically with lots of weight. I do have the 40-gal ones from HD and know they can handle quite a bit of weight on top. No personal exp with the Lowes ones, though.
