I bought this a few months ago when it was on slickdeals and paid more. It arrived looking new and is actually one of my favorite PCs ever. It's so fast and instantly turns on and logs me in. (I've had Surface RT, Pro 1, Pro 3, Pro 7 and bought my daughter 2 Surface Laptops). This is a fantastic deal especially with the 2 year warranty, if you don't mind the slightly older generation. A big plus for me is that it's Intel powered (I can't run the software and hardware I need to run on ARM yet).

I don't recommend buying a last gen PC this year because the new chips battery life is so much better.

For those unfamiliar, this isn't optional. It's a laptop that doesn't even come with a keyboard! I'm just waiting for them to start selling a subscription service for individual keys now.

(Basic letters tier, advanced numbers tier, and punctuation add-on. Enter key has a one-month free trial, only comes with forced arbitration!)

Reading your response reminded me of that one dude from The Verge trying to build a pc ha. Just saying the most random stuff lol
And you reminded me of someone who actually reads something called "Verge", lol.

araraja7 has a fair point. i7 processors heat up fast and throttle quickly, often times given nearly identical performance to their same-family i5 cousins (with only the most modest improvements in very-short-burst single core usage).

Apple's M-series really is knocking it out of the park, and there are $600 M1 Macbook Airs to be had.

Genuinely, what? Intel chips run at a much higher wattage (relative) compared to Apple Silicon and Qualcomm SoC chips, generating more heat which is problematic in such a small form factor. Intel CPU's also draw more power which reduces battery life, or increases item weight due to increased battery necessity (which would also benefit ANY CPU). Apple Silicon has wiped the floor of laptops and portable devices, and Qualcomm is finally producing chips for laptops. Intel is failing, losing market share in the server/workspace industry, blew it's shot at the graphics card industry, and has stopped innovating in general. A 10-second glance at NASDAQ: INTC would show the current trajectory of the company (unless bailout) is a merger. The purposeful stagnation and lack of R&D (to line the stakeholders pockets) during 2000-2016 is the culprit, and was a big middle finger to consumers. They are dealing with the repercussions of greed.

600$ish for an i7 "U" series (not "P") from 2022 is terrible when compared to current offerings - and obviously depending on needs of consumer. Spend the extra money and get a product which matches your needs. If you simply need a laptop to browse and consume media, there are much better options for the same cost or less. If using for writing software, QA/testing, design of any sort (3d, CAD), etc - invest in a newer device with a better processor as technology has made leaps with Qualcomm and Apple Silicon.

If you dislike Apple for whatever reason, Qualcomm has their own SoC's which resemble Apple Silicon (Apple M-Series) running on Windows. Parallels or VMware emulates Windows better than Intel runs Windows. Not an exaggeration.

I had the new snapdragon surface pro at launch and had to return it because it was not compatible with all 4 of my VPN apps. Also video games were hit or miss. I'm sure next Gen chips and software compatibility will get better but the current snapdragon soc is not really a true apples to apples replacement.

The words i7 and Tablet doesn't go well. It's ancient tech in my opinion. For a lot it might not matter but with Qualcomm snapdragon chips and Apple M Series blowing away the market these i7 based devices will get old soon. And 600$ ish is still a lot.
In the fist full quarter of Snapdragon, they could sell less than 1 in 125 PCs that were ARM powered... In spite of the steep discounts on ARM laptops soon after launch... I whish I could run ARM. It's far superior hardware. But I can't run a system that works only 98% of the time. The other 2% can be mission critical.

Of course, if you just buy it to watch youtube and do email / Word / Excel, an ARM based SP is far superior to this! Far superior! This actually looks very expensive compared to a brand new SP 11.

That's the thing. Windows is known to be the platform of broad compatibility. Sure, there's always a bespoke piece of software or hardware that doesn't play nicely and ends up being incompatible -- especially between major versions of the OS. But seriously speaking, most things work without issue. That's the whole benefit of going with Windows.

But when incompatibility exists within current major software on current mass market hardware on the current OS....that's simply unacceptable. I can't stomach that risk.

I'll play it safe and get an Intel or AMD chip, because I will not play the "will it -bleeping- work? why doesn't it work?!?" game when I'm on a deadline. Maybe it'll be a better landscape in 3-5 years when I'm ready to refresh again.
