I have one of these. It uses displaylink and is unable to stay consistently connected in MacOS after an hour or few. I'm guessing it's a hardware issue with the monitor because it goes away if I let the monitor sit and not with a reboot, but it could also be a weird driver issue.

im struggling to understand what this thing is.

it connects to your computer in addition to your monitor, and really only serves a single purpose?

It is basically a webcam, a USB-C hub, and a video capture device with a display on it.

It uses UVC for the video input if you use it as a monitor, which is exactly what a 'capture box' does that you connect to a video out on your computer or a console to capture video game footage for streaming. It then puts that onto a monitor. It will be using the USB-C data for this so it is probably streaming YUV2 @ 60fps.

The rest of it is acting as a webcam for Teams, with a built in vanity light that makes your face look good on conference calls.

I thought you had a typo but I was able to find some reviews from 2022 when this came out that mention >$500 price. I did see a Forbes online article saying $800 but the same author said $300 for a 22" monitor, $200-300 for webcam, and $100-200 for speakers, so either different currency or it's the guy who priced these P21's for Poly Big Grin
Also, I guess Poly was the result of a merger between Plantronics and Polycom.

$30 for a 21" monitor seems stupid cheap, plus a built in webcam...fighting myself to buy this for pretty much no purpose in my life Wink

The only thing I don't like is "You must install the software to use the Poly Studio P21 device as a display [poly.com]." I assume that is why they are currently so cheap as it limits the use for the general public, otherwise it seems like people would be snapping them up for console / Steam Deck displayers, or perhaps cell phone / tablet external monitors.

Does this mean it cannot be used as a bigger display for cell phones?

That's what I am guessing based on my LIMITED research. My idea was to use it in my detached workshop. Sometimes I'll watch repair videos on my phone while following along. This seemed like a good (and cheap) way to do it easily big on a bigger screen but the fact software appears to be required for video out makes me think it may not be the best choice after all.

If I was subjected to more Teams calls at work I would probably buy for it's original purpose but luckily those have tapered off in the last couple years.

If your cell phone is able to output to UVC over USB then it will work.

I had this monitor, you can use it with your phone if you install the 'displaylink presenter' app.

I got one last time because of the SD effect and ended up regretting it. It's not very useful beyond wirelessly charging a phone. It could have been a great HDMI monitor if they had included an HDMI port. DisplayLink has its use cases. If you're buying it for its intended use, it's okay. I just wish there was a community dedicated to hacking or further developing
