For most people a decent hand mixer at half the price or less is adequate. Most people won't use the Kitchen Aid weekly, they'll use it maybe a dozen times a year (and not really need it for most of those uses). That's an expensive gadget.
If you want to use it for making bread dough, don't expect it to work well or last long.
If you can get your hands on an old Sunbeam stand mixer (they are out there), there are videos online showing how to take them apart, clean out all the grease, and put them back together. The grease after many years hardens and that's why so many don't work. It's also a good idea to install a modern grounded cord - there are videos showing you how to do this.
I got a Kitchen Aid Pro about 10 years ago for about $100 (before Kohl's cash factored in) - thanks to a SD thread. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise. I don't use it for bread (bread is pretty easy to mix up in a bowl and knead by hand), and am careful to start it at a low setting (don't go straight to a higher setting). But there's a bit of luck in keeping them working - some just die sooner.

I've now ordered the 6-quart version from eBay. Does anyone know if the KSM5.5 is the same as the KSM6, or if one is a better model?
