The R7 is a great value, unless you want the mute/mark buttons on the front and/or care about the tiny range increase. I've had the R7 for years now and my brother just got the R8.

R8 is a tad bit better, but again it's negligible. The R7 gives you PLENTY of time to slow down, especially if they aren't using instant on….Saved me a bunch of times and has easily paid for itself. Best RD I've ever had (out of 15-20) over decades of moderate speeding…

Oh and guess what, I'm one of the only almost 50 yr olds I know that's never had a speeding ticket (and ALWAYS had an RD), go figure…

Edit: Not sure why I'm getting downvoted, please enlighten me

Is there an R9 around the corner or what replaces this?

There's an R9 but it costs like $5000 and requires a custom install.

Or, you could just download Waze for free
Use Google Maps. They are now embedding Waze alerts in Google Maps for free Big Grin

R9 has been out over a year now. It's the installed version. R8W was just released. Vortex Radar says it is the same as R8 functionally, with the addition of wifi. I still think R8 will be the best bang for the buck for most people for years to come. I highly recommend it. I don't mind having to plug it into a computer to update the firmware.

Agreed if you are in an area where people are heavily invested in providing updates. At times updates may not come in time for those who have a lead foot. At least in my area the cops frequently change areas where its easy to speed (going down hill or when speed drops from 45 to 25 without warning). Has saved me a few times.

Recommend to combine any radar with Highway Radar app which is free (just youtube how to install it and its great). Or you can use it as stand alone with Waze (just let app run in background when driving).

R7 is also a good deal as well if on a budget then R3 (R3 was great before I lost it during my move to a new place).

I saw the r8w at Sema, there are add on modules for laser as well that the r8 isn't compatible with.

R8w isn't a laser jammer AFAIK, only R9.

Like you said, it was recently announced the upcoming add on modules won't be compatible with R8/R4 (as previously promised). However, I was just reading on reddit they may have reversed their decision. I don't keep up to date on this stuff, anyone else know? To be honest I don't think I'll get the laser jammers either way ($$$), but I'm just curious.

For those actually using the R8's or other versions, what are your thoughts on this or the R8w vs the Valentine 1? I have three Valentine 1's currently and may be looking to upgrade.

They stepped that back and have since said the lidar add on will also be compatible with the original R8 since they had originally advertised it as being so.

Vortex had just announced that they reversed course and will support the laser module on both the R8 and R4 (is a short on his channel). At this point the only benefit of the "w" detectors is over the air updates which I don't believe is worth it.
