The lobby is different. Different physics and lighting with the newer FX and newer previously unreleased tables.

FX3 was Zen's own custom engine.

FX is Unreal 4.

Some prefer FX saying that the physics are closer to real tables. Tables did not import from the older FX3 which annoyed(to put it mildly) the fan base. They also tried to implement a subscription service in addition to purchasing tables - not sure if that is still the case.

The Williams collections were also broken into sets of 3 for FX3 - so I own 6 of the 9 tables in this set for FX3. Making this collection less than ideal for me. I will probably pick up the two other individual tables though.
Download the base games. Pinball FX has three free tables with unlimited play - Wild West Rampage, Fish Tales and Sorcerer's Lair. FX3 has Fish Tales free. So, you can compare that game between the two.

I think the differences are minor personally and I prefer the digital tables based on real life tables as compared to the ones created just for the digital space. Leaderboards are still active for FX3.

You're on SlickDeals - so I say buy what's on sale.

So which would you choose or recommend for a beginner?

I have the William's stuff on PS but at this price I'd buy them again (or at least Twilight Zone which is one of my favorites) on PC

edit - oh the steam versions are on sale too. Twilight Zone is 3.39, I might have to pick that one up. I mean I already own the damn thing on PS but the tables don't transfer between platforms.

edit v2 - and it went back to 9.99 while it was sitting in my cart. dammit

I have acquired just a couple of tables on Pinball FX3 so far. Would this be a good time to switch to FX as I now look to build my inventory of tables? I know they use different engines, would want the engine that is most forgiving and easiest

Cyclone was originally available for The Pinball Arcade, but the table has long since been delisted. The only way to acquire a copy currently, is either via the Arocoda Pinball Arcade Software [arcoodapinballarcade.com] ( (you can read more about it here) [thepinballchick.com], which costs around $500, or by buying or acquiring the account of someone who bought the table when it was available.

Comet has never seen an official, licensed release.

That being said, you can play both of these tables for free with the open source Visual Pinball X [github.com] software, but you should expect a bit of a learning curve with initially getting it configured. If you're not already familiar with VPX, there's a decent primer here [gitlab.io].

If you're just getting started or want to build a collection of tables, you will likely want to go with FX as opposed to FX3. You'll ultimately have access to more tables at a lower cost as FX is both the current platform, and where sales such as this one are targeted. You can also routinely pick up tables at a discounted rate from sites such as eBay, CDKeys, and Eneba, though those typically require a VPN to redeem.

Since FX is the current iteration of the series, it will also give you access to tables you may not own via the seasonal events (Main Menu > Events). At least one table will be the featured free table each week, and you generally get 3 plays per table per day.

The pack is definitely worth getting, but it has also gone on sale multiple times over the last year for the same price as this one. Ultimately, it becomes a question of, do you want to pay full price to get access to those specific tables now, or do you want to hold out and wait for it to potentially go on sale again?

If you want to build your library and save money in the process, you can use a site such as TrueAchievements [trueachievements.com] to set sale alerts for any of the specific tables or packs that you want.
