Available from:About this book:
  • The Carryx – part empire, part hive – have waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy. Now, they are facing a great and deathless enemy. The key to their survival may rest with the humans of Anjiin.
  • Caught up in academic intrigue and affairs of the heart, Dafyd Alkhor is pleased just to be an assistant to a brilliant scientist and his celebrated research team. Then the Carryx ships descend, decimating the human population and taking the best and brightest of Anjiin society away to serve on the Carryx homeworld, and Dafyd is swept along with them.
  • They are dropped in the middle of a struggle they barely understand, set in a competition against the other captive species with extinction as the price of failure. Only Dafyd and a handful of his companions see past the Darwinian contest to the deeper game that they must play to survive: learning to understand – and manipulate – the Carryx themselves.
  • With a noble but suicidal human rebellion on one hand and strange and murderous enemies on the other, the team pays a terrible price to become the trusted servants of their new rulers.
  • Dafyd Alkhor is a simple man swept up in events that are beyond his control and more vast than his imagination. He will become the champion of humanity and its betrayer, the most hated man in history and the guardian of his people.
  • This is where his story begins.

Don't know how no one has mentioned this, but The Mercy of Gods if from the writers of The Expanse series. Additionally, last month it was announced that The Captive's War TV adaptation is being developed for Amazon MGM Studios by Expanding Universe company (who did The Expanse).

Pretty solid book overall. Finished it last month. I'd say it takes a good 100-150 pages to really get into the meat of what they're trying to do, but I'm excited for the rest of the series to see how they handle the threads they've started.

I'll read anything by these people (aka this one fake person) after The Expanse. But I'm a cheapass slickdealer so I was waiting for a sale as well. Bought!

I was a little disappointed in how they ended The Expanse story. Like they couldn't figure out what to do with all the mystery they created.

I sort of agree. I thought the ending was fine based on the last 3 books, but I wasn't a huge fan of the 30 year time jump to begin with just to setup a future tech power. Either way, I enjoyed all 9 books of The Expanse (10 if you count Memory's Legion) and I enjoyed this one so I'll keep reading from them.

Expanse is why this caught my eye, but I haven't read Expanse yet. I'm assuming this is not related to Expanse and is a new story.

I'm buying books at a far greater rate than reading them, but this one is hard to pass by.
