Apparently the "Essentials" edition has cardboard resources and is missing a solo mode compared to the normal edition.

This is a very solid deal. Between base Everdell and Everdell farshore I prefer farshore. The anchor mechanic gives you more flexibility on who to play for free.

This essential edition doesn't have resin resource pieces but that's not important for gameplay. It doesn't have solo mode if that's important to you.

I feel like I've missed the "boat" on Everdell and this spinoff. I'll check out videos, but what is Everdell most like in comparison to other games?

Others have suggested Wingspan, Imperial Settlers, and terraforming mars... It's a worker placement game where you gather resources to then build your own "city" of cards in front of you which are buildings and critters. It's super cute with good meat on its bones, a no brainer at this price IMO for self or gifting.

Everdell is a great game with no direct player confrontation, which is great when playing with people like my wife. I've played both the original (pearlbrook and bellfaire are my favorite expansions, others are ok) and Farshore, and I strongly prefer the original. I don't play solo, so I can't speak about it. Everdell is of my favorite and most-played games in the collection (~400 total titles).

They should label this "wife-friendly" on the box 😆 Most marriages already have enough confrontation as-is. (of course "spouse-friendly" works too and is perhaps more appropriate...)
