I'd buy based on cooling. If a laptop thermal throttles after 5 minutes doesn't matter what card you have
Nothing I read showed that thermal throttling performance is worse between the two variants.
And it may only be 10%, but if for the same price, I could get 10% more performance, then why would I ask for 10% less? Especially if thermal throttling is not an issue.
If you have some other information that shows the 4090 throttle worse in the Helios 18, I'm definitely interested! Thank you so much.

Weight, battery life, size, other features. That's why

Oh you mean in general, I thought you were referring to specific reasons why the Helio 18 4080 is worth more than then 4090 variant. Looks like you are referring to other laptops in general. Very unlikely at this price point (<2k) to get something that is lighter and retains the same kind of cooling capacity on a 4080/4090.
A friend was recently gifted (I believe) a Razor 14 4070 and he is very unsatisfied with it lol because it sounds like a jet engine according to him.
Yes I do have a "slimmer" older laptop that I currently use - and while I find I take my laptop around occasionally, 95% of the time it stays in place - a heavier laptop isn't an issue for me.
the 4090 variant that was on sale has the 250hz miniled panel as well. Definitely worth the $100 premium for 10% more raw performance, more vram (that honestly will probably only matter if hooking it up to a 4k tv/monitor), and a nicer screen.

I just looked at the 2 models. Other than GPUs nothing notable/noticeable that you will find in day to day use.
Your friend could try underclocking. Might run much cooler and little to no performance loss. Or try a laptop stand with fans

I bought the Acer 16" Predator w/ the 13th gen I9 and 4080 GPU during pre-black friday. On turbo mode it's like a jet taking off loud. I have a laptop cooler that gets as loud as well. It's a great price but I'm not sure I need a 4080 for the games I play. I think I'd rather get a used 3070 TI laptop and deck it out w/ RAM and fast NVME.

Also, this has the newer 14900HX processor while that one had the 13900HX.

I was a minute late on that one.
I imagine the extra 4gb of vram (16GB v 12GB) makes it well worth the extra money.
