You can upgrade the RAM this system to 32GB. For a mid-low gaming system I would recommend seeing how it runs with 8GB RAM and upgrading to 16GB if the system has trouble with the workloads you throw at it.

Here's a comparison of the 3050 laptop with 4GB VRAM against a Radeon 780M integrated graphics (last generation AMD integrated graphics).

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Rad...598.0.html

It is very detailed, but probably the best way to use it is to search (ctrl-f) the page for games your son is likely to play and see if the 3050 makes a big enough difference in frame rates to make up for the downside of this system. If the games your son wants to play are playable with a Radeon 780M integrated graphics there are many laptops available in this price range.

The downside of this system is the CPU. The Ryzen 7 7435HS is a mid-range CPU for gaming laptops that features 8 Zen 3+ cores and no iGPU. So while you'll get decent mid range gaming performance from the CPU and low-mid range gaming performance from the RTX 3050 GPU, there is no integrated graphics available. This means that the battery life of the system will be low since it uses the power hungry GPU to drive the monitor even when you are watching a video or writing an email. This laptop also has a very basic screen best used in dark environments and only having 45% NTSC color coverage and no USB-C charging.

Personally I would hold out for a system with an RTX 4050 rather than a 3050 if you can wait. I have seen some 4050 systems in the $550-$650 price range (likely refurbished). The RTX 4050 offers 80 tensor cores and therefore supports DLSS 3 including frame generation that can have a big impact in supported games. Getting a 40XX GPU is a pretty big step up for games that use DLSS to generate extra frames for increased frame rate.

If you're willing to look for open box or refurbished laptops, a 4060 system with a CPU that has integrated graphics can be found for around $700. 4060 may be overkill for your son's needs now, but will give him a much higher ceiling for playable 3D games in the future.

3050 will be much better than integrated graphics. Depending on the title, you will be able to play from low to medium settings. You should also upgrade the ram to minimum 16gb. Storage is also 512gb which is a little low, 1 tb should be minimum, and 2tb is ideal. With larger storage, it will run you about another 100 to 150 or so depending on what you choose.
It says supports memory up to 32 Gigs, so I guess it should.

Got a different Asus with 3050 for $400, upgraded to 24 GB for $25. No regrets.
I'm not into any new games but tested CS2 with decent settings, and it was shooting close to 150fps on 1080 with great frame handling out of the box. For TUF, this looks like a great deal.

Okay, not exactly top of the line components. If you can replace memory (can you?) would this be a good starter gaming device? My head's spinning with all the options between desktops and laptops. My 9 yr old son isn't going to be getting into top tier games for quite some time. Is the 3050 going to do much better than integrated graphics? But the price is so low...

I did not realize that a 7435H Rembrandt-R with disabled iGPU specifically for laptops with dGPUs existed, interesting.

Walmart site, states that Max Ram supported is 16gb. I'd do verify on ASUS website however that max is 32gb

This is a good price for an entry level gaming system. Asus is generally good brand too.

Your 9 year old is likely playing more basic games at that age like Roblox and Minecraft and this is plenty. I would also not even worry about upgrading the memory until further down the road if necessary.

How does this compare to Lenovo LOQ 15.6" Gaming Laptop FHD AMD Ryzen 5 7235HS with 12GB Memory NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6GB 512GB SSD Luna Grey 83JC0001US - Best Buy? I got it for my 9-year-old, but I'm not really familiar with the Ryzen series. Got it fro $479, so I was wondering if $20 difference is worth it to buy this Asus. TIA.

I went with the Best Buy due to its upgrade capabilities plus the extra processing power wasn't needed for my kid's work. Plus Walmart charge a lot more tax for some reason than Best Buy.

For 100-150$ more you can get an rtx 4060. If anything this laptop should be 100$ less right now

Weird its not even the high powered 3050... If this was the 100 watt+ 3050 I would say not a bad deal at all but at the 60 wattage, meh... We had better deals last year and for $100 more you could get a 4050.

That one looks pretty good. While Roblox and Minecraft will initially dominate, and free titles from Epic will follow, I'm sure he'll want more. This one might fit the bill.

GPU is really entry-entry level. Don't expect much longevity with future games.
