Here's a comparison of the 3050 laptop with 4GB VRAM against a Radeon 780M integrated graphics (last generation AMD integrated graphics).

It is very detailed, but probably the best way to use it is to search (ctrl-f) the page for games your son is likely to play and see if the 3050 makes a big enough difference in frame rates to make up for the downside of this system. If the games your son wants to play are playable with a Radeon 780M integrated graphics there are many laptops available in this price range.
The downside of this system is the CPU. The Ryzen 7 7435HS is a mid-range CPU for gaming laptops that features 8 Zen 3+ cores and no iGPU. So while you'll get decent mid range gaming performance from the CPU and low-mid range gaming performance from the RTX 3050 GPU, there is no integrated graphics available. This means that the battery life of the system will be low since it uses the power hungry GPU to drive the monitor even when you are watching a video or writing an email. This laptop also has a very basic screen best used in dark environments and only having 45% NTSC color coverage and no USB-C charging.
Personally I would hold out for a system with an RTX 4050 rather than a 3050 if you can wait. I have seen some 4050 systems in the $550-$650 price range (likely refurbished). The RTX 4050 offers 80 tensor cores and therefore supports DLSS 3 including frame generation that can have a big impact in supported games. Getting a 40XX GPU is a pretty big step up for games that use DLSS to generate extra frames for increased frame rate.
If you're willing to look for open box or refurbished laptops, a 4060 system with a CPU that has integrated graphics can be found for around $700. 4060 may be overkill for your son's needs now, but will give him a much higher ceiling for playable 3D games in the future.

Got a different Asus with 3050 for $400, upgraded to 24 GB for $25. No regrets.
I'm not into any new games but tested CS2 with decent settings, and it was shooting close to 150fps on 1080 with great frame handling out of the box. For TUF, this looks like a great deal.

I did not realize that a 7435H Rembrandt-R with disabled iGPU specifically for laptops with dGPUs existed, interesting.

This is a good price for an entry level gaming system. Asus is generally good brand too.
Your 9 year old is likely playing more basic games at that age like Roblox and Minecraft and this is plenty. I would also not even worry about upgrading the memory until further down the road if necessary.
Is this one worth the $100 more?
