it's 2024, that makes no sense for an ordinary desktop to choose the mouse, keyboard, and monitor to you. I can choose those for myself, please deduct the cost of those from my computer.

Good way to get the student discount while supporting a local chain store.

Not really, the real difference between this and that M2 is that this has double the ram (16gb).

I was able to get two 4K monitor and 1 2K monitor display on this Base Mac Mini M4
Quote from wdslkd :
Apple indicates the base M4 can support 3 displays:

https://www.apple.com/mac-mini/specs/
Display Support
M4
Simultaneously supports up to three displays:
  • Up to three displays: Two displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K resolution at 60Hz over HDMI
  • Up to two displays: One display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 240Hz over Thunderbolt or HDMI
...
What I make of that is that the number of displays you can run depends on the resolution and refresh rate that you want to use.
Thanks. I will be running 3, 2K monitors. Just need a cheap fast and reliable PC. Will be using Parrallels to run Windows. I don't game. Just browse the internet and stream shows.

so you are paying $220 for an extra 8gb of ram??? that sounds like a ripoff then at $499 when you can get the m2 for 279$
Not when the 8gb m2 becomes unusable in 2-3 years. Also consider the ssd wear that the 8gb ram model will go through because of page swap (and the best buy open box products may already have a ton of ssd wear on them). The M4 with 16gb is definitely a better value, it's new and will last a long time. There is a reason why Apple upped the base model ram size to 16gb.

I wonder how much money bestbuy paid to Washington politicians to keep their monopoly here. Fryz was an overpriced haven who went bankrupt and closed. Bestbuy is the same, plus their 14-day return period is weak compared to most 30-day return period from other retailers. I hope one day Microcenter will open a store here.
What do you mean? There's barely any microcenter stores anywhere, so why would it be any different in Washington.

Unless someone uses apps that tax the M4 GPU, the M2 open box BestBuy $279~ is the better (cost vs performance) buy.
Just stop, that thing had 8 GB RAM

The computer is designed for productivity work like documenting, web browsing, or video editing. It's not suitable for gaming. It will require some technical effort to make it works, and it won't be a great experience.
I game on my macbook pro m1 max with geForce now and dominate the game, just fyi. Faster fps and all ultra high settings. Think outside the box man.

Not video editing the GPU is too weak. I tested the pro version and it's total trash compare to a gaming pc running 4080.
Not true in the least brother. You need to fact check yourself.

if I had $500 to spend, I would think of upgrading. Remember the time when you bought a new computer and it came with a mouse and keyboard?
I guess those days are in the rear view mirror at this point.
Yeah when they cost $1500 not adjusted for inflation and were obsolete within 3 years. No thanks

My bad, wrong reply too.
I don't know what's better but something to consider in your comparison is that the GPU probably cost as much as the the Apple computer before you add every other component to have a whole PC.

I'm old enough to remember cell phones coming with power adapters too.

I'm using a Logitech wireless keyboard with built-in trackpad with mine.

I have about 10 locally hosted LLM AI models I can pick from running on mine. All the 7 Billion parameter ones are very responsive on it.

I mean, you can do the same thing on a $70 laptop with a celeron or your television lol.

GeForce now has its own limitations, a monthly fee, input lag, queues, not all games available (only like 15% of my library when I had it) and sucks with a less than perfect internet connection. I had it to use on business trips but was largely unusable on public WiFi and hotspots. I had better luck with cross over and the porting kit but I still wouldn't recommend this to someone who wants to game yet unless you like constantly tinkering and headaches

Do you not remember the included mouse and keyboard also being unusable e-waste?
