I'd advise to wait and try to catch the below linked set on sale or even pay the price it is now. That set is powered and rechargeable by way of a removable and replaceable standard 18650 yet still also has the ability to run on standard alkaline. I paid $25 a couple years ago and have been very impressed with them and use them often. If I would have been having to purchase and swap batteries I do not think I would feel the same. The cost of buying batteries for the ones in this deal will add cost as you use them.

Bought this, arrived today.
Came in the box shown (my photo)and i was impressed by the first looks of the box. Looks like a box for something that would cost$100 or more. Going to give this as a xmas present and getting another one for myself.

Plus its a great lantern, i got 3 last year on sale, black. red colored were not on sale. this time it was.

I clicked on the forum thread because I had to see this super elegant box.

I have no idea what I was expecting, but that was not it.

This would be a pretty good deal especially considering it comes with four 18650 batteries.
Except, reviews indicate the included batteries are junky Chinese that in many cases either don't at all or won't hold a charge and are not expected to last long. But you say you've been using them for a while and all is OK with charging the18650s? Maybe you got better batteries or it's just hit or miss, but you're happy with them right?

It's all personal preference. I find the AA batteries to be more convenient for camping and power outages. Can't really recharge it if you don't have power.

They do look like semi cheap junky batteries but I have had no problems and they run a good long time when in use depending what I am using them for and I do not recall one ever running out in the middle of being needed. Keep in mind I had three out and I do not know which one I grabbed but often I did no immediately charge just put them back on the shelf and they were ready and charged for next use. Have only charged a few times over a couple years under intermittent use.

As a for instance one was just used this Halloween as my mother in law ran the treat table and she had to be out two to three hours and it was still going strong. she liked it so much I sent it home with her..

Who knows maybe they are using worse ones in them now but I have many things that run on lower end internal lithiums and they still are going. That is why I like them as you can swap out the power source without having to take something apart and solder. You can always replace them high end 18650 which is getting so cheap and common that the cost difference between alkaline and them is becoming negligible. Even with not the best lithiums I still recommend them.

I will say that when i first got them at first glance with all the plastic they almost appeared a bit cheesy and cheap overall. Yet find myself liking and grabbing these over my heavy duty D cell lanterns that stay on the shelf as I do not want to have to buy more D cells.

My personal preference has to options better than one. I also find going to the store and paying for less powerful batteries less convenient. Carrying one battery versus three I also find nice. You can just as well take one charged lithiums versus three AA that you will have to throw away after use and repurchase again. If AAs go dead you still have no power and I see no difference there at all except the one has to be tossed and reordered and the other can be reused on a future trip. Take the lithium home and you are ready to go again with no shopping involved. That starts adding up fast. I have 18650 that I have been using for more than five years and have had alkalines go bad on the shelf in the same period.

I own those exact lanterns (the black ones you linked). It is nice to have the two power options, but like another poster said, the included 18650 suck. They're terrible. I bought new ones online. Another issue with both the OP product and the one you linked is that the sliding/expansion light (the brighter light) doesn't dim when you slide it partially closed. It's either on or off. So even if you slide it partially closed to dim the light output, the light is still on full 100% inside the unit. It would be so much better if the sliding function actually dimmed the LEDs themselves, thus saving power.

That would be nice but is a very ingenious, simple and non complex way to engineer something to keep costs low. I see either other way and take it as af feature. There are many lanterns that have such functions and you can buy them but will pay the price to do so.

Personally I would rather see more simplicity and lower cost for many of the things we need, as bells and whistles always cost and add extra complexity and points of failure.

Don't get me wrong I have been eyeing the Sofirn lantern that is an elegant high end, high tech design and does just about everything but when considering the reality of my use cases the cheapo ones do. Sometimes with my feature rich stuff I have to pull a manual out. I like the simplicity and basic engineering of the Evereadys.
