Note that this board is only suitable for lower wattage CPUs as its VRM cooling is terrible, see Hardware Unboxed video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p...3s&t=1402s [youtube.com]
You appear to have drawn an incorrect conclusion from that video. In fact, at the section of the video you've linked, Steve literally says "as long as the bar graph is colored blue, it's a pass. It doesn't matter if the vrm ran at 50 or 80 degrees, the end result for you is going to be the same". That chart is for an hour long looped cinebench 2024 run on the 7950x (16 core zen4 cpu, functionally tied with the zen5 9950x for highest power cpu on the am5 platform). A vrm temperature of 84C, while not fantastic, is perfectly acceptable under those conditions, and it didn't exhibit any meaningful throttling. While the limited io and various other compromises inherent to it's nature as a budget board make it a generally suboptimal option for those who need high end 12-core+ cpus, the vrm is capable of grudgingly handling the top end 16 core cpus. This is an excellent deal if you can tolerate the compromises of a budget tier board. Hardware unboxed considers it the best budget am5 option available, even at the normal price of $120: https://youtu.be/57X2FygcqLE?t=75

Please keep in mind this motherboard does not have onboard wifi (though it has a M.2 Socket (Key E) for a type 2230 WiFi/BT PCIe WiFi module), you'll need to use the onboard 2.5gb lan if you don't purchase a wifi module separately. Depending on desired generation and attributes, decent wifi modules tend to be between $10-$30. Additionally, it only has two memory slots, though that really shouldn't matter to you unless you need more than 64gb of memory (2x32gb dual rank). In fact, only having two slots tends to improve memory overclocking capabilities. Storage is somewhat limited, with only two m.2 slots and 4 sata ports, though at least one m.2 slot is pcie gen5 x4 while the other is gen4 x4. The primary pcie x16 slot is only gen4, though realistically pcie gen5 x16 shouldn't matter much for even the upcoming generation of gpus. Overall io is somewhat limited, though not terrible, and should be sufficient for the average user. The integrated Realtek ALC897 audio solution is also quite low end, though if you want high quality sound you shouldn't be using your motherboards output anyways.

Overall, for a midrange and below build, this motherboard is a very good value. Boards with substantially superior features tend to be at minimum ~$140, and the majority of people probably don't need more than what this board offers. If you're building a basic gaming rig, you'll have a better experience buying a budget board like this and putting the extra $40 towards a better gpu.

Been using it for just over a year now. Happy with the purchase and happy I stabilized ram at 8000MHz CL34, something challenging on many higher priced boards.

Just two notes from the last time this deal surfaced:
  1. Amazon is not official Asrock distributor, there were cases in the past when Asrock didn't honor warranty for product bought directly from Amazon.
  2. The same board been in stock on Newegg for the same price last couple of weeks, it can also be combined with RAM or CPU to get additional $5 discount. Newegg is official Asrock distributor.

I think my only concern with this board is the fact that Amazon says it's frequently returned.

For $20 more you can get 4 slots of ram and Wi-Fi

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJT9KKSD

Or this at new egg no Wi-Fi but the heat sinks look better and 4 slots of ram

It's nice to have 4 ram slots. However it's hard to get 4 sticks stable over 5600mhz. So for gaming use. You probably aren't going to use more than 2 slots.

First one (ASRock B650M PG Lightning WiFi) has worse VRM than B650M-HDV/M.2
For the second one (B650M PRO RS) - is it ever worth it to pay extra $20 to install 4 sticks or memory? I thought that CPUs only support dual mode so if you install 4 sticks they'll be combined into pairs anyway and won't give any performance boost. If anything, ASRock B650M Pro RS WiFi https://www.newegg.com/asrock-b65...13-162-131 is only $10 more and seems much better choice for those who need wifi/bluetooth.

I just bought this motherboard and paired it with a 9900x using proxmox and a bunch of Virtual Machines I'm having no issues currently. I'm absolutely going to wring every red cent out of this cpu. Maybe extreme overclocking might be an issue, but if you're going that hard, you can either, get another motherboard, or put new heatsinks and rig up a fan to blow on the vrms.

I have this exact motherboard. I am using the Ryzen 5 8600G with Patriot Viper 2x16gb DDR5 7000mhz. After proper setup I ran this setup overnight with No Errors No Warnings.
If you need more M.2 Slots or more Ram Slots or More SATA Slots, then by all means by an ATX motherboard.
This Asrock MATX is for a different situation than a person that needs an Everything Board.
Furthermore there is Nothing wrong with the VRM thermals. Yes you read that right, Nothing!

I am tempted as I need to replace my 5 year old system as the LAN port has gone out and the USB ports are all flaky now. I am hesitating because that is also an ASRock motherboard. NIC went out about a year ago and the USB ports just started acting up in the last two weeks.

It is a good deal, I am just soured a bit by my current experience.

It seems to be a very well received, well valued and straight forward budget option. But just like all AM5 boards, they're only 2 years old. Hard to tell about longevity.
just to compare, I was considering upgrading my older AM4 board to one with pcie4 but any decent one cost about the same as this ASROCK(even has pcie5 for the M.2). hard to beat this price.
